Industrial Heritage Photography of Haiko Hebig

Haiko Hebig’s photography of abandoned or decrepit industrial machinery and its control rooms is striking. And because Hebig is bewitched by the mills and factories of Germany, he also blogs about plant closings (and the occasional re-opening).

    Fascinating! Like an end-of-the-world travelogue.

These photos look really familiar. It looks like the same control room that Rammstein used in their Live Aus Berlin photoset.

I grew up in Eastern Washington State and there are abandoned missle silos full of old equipment rooms. When we were young we had to break the chain locks to get in but the treasures of old computer consoles were worth the effort. There’s something oddly beautiful about outdated and useless computer equipment.

I used to go to school on an American Air Force base in England when I was a kid in the very early 70s, and we used to sneak into this underground complex that was obviously some kind of war room. Just like the movies: Gigantic table maps with little figures to move around on them, a big console area with phones and control panels, other huge maps on the walls that could slide back and forth in front of each other. Y’know — just like Dr. Strangelove! Didn’t take pix, sorry to say, but I have fond memories of post-apocalypse dreams from those days.

As a TV producer, this has always been a secret passion of mine. Thanks for this fantastic link.

So … you found a cool link, posted it to one blog, then posted a link to that blog entry on the other blog. Boingboing, the only blog in the universe that linkjacks ITSELF.

Love the new site Boing Boing!

    Those pics are incredible.
That’s the kind of stuff I’d love to stumble across some time.

We’re still trying to figure out the best way to tie together posts from the Gadgets section to the front page, without bifurcating the discussion between two permalinks. We still haven’t quite figured out the perfect solution, obviously, but we’re working on it, I promise!

I think we may be putting up something more formal later asking how everybody thinks would be the best way. We’re all aware this isn’t quite optimized for minimum suck.

I made the same association as a couple other commenters: military tech. What’s that about?

I had the chance to visit Minuteman Missile National (U.S.) Historic Site (www.nps.gov/mimi), where they’ve preserved an underground control room for launching missiles. Cozier than Hebig’s sprawling consoles, but vastly evocative.
