Grid Sequencers Coming Soon: Tenori-On and Monome
Yamaha's upcoming "Tenori-On" sequencer looks terribly fun, the sort of thing you'd expect to see in software or in a research lab, not on the shelves. But the shelves are its destination, first in the U.K. for market testing. I can't seem to find a price.
A few people in the Gizmodo comments also are pointing out the Monome project, as well, which may have cooked up the idea first. The Monome collective will be releasing new devices of their own by mid-October, including a massive 256-button grid. (Here's a video of a Monome board.)
Frankly, I'd be happy with either!

http://createdigitalmusic.com/ is reporting a price of 599 english pounds.
Cacealian is correct.
I wonder if they could be programmed to run Conway's Game of Life...
The Monome can indeed run the Game of Life, but it's a bit of a work in progess. CreateDigitalMusic (an excellent blog in its own right, btw) is full of great info on the Monome and has been following the Tenori-On very closely.
I published the tenori-on price of £599 here

Tenori-on is self contained - the monome requires a computer to run. I saw the tenori-on at siggraph in '05 ('04?) at siggraph. Definitely not a ripoff, I think these are parallel developments. The Livid Ohm controller coming soon:

has a nice grid, but it doesn't have the nifty LED talkback that the monome and tenori-on have
Apparently Yamaha aren't going to be selling the Tenori-On at the Phonica Records launch in Soho tomorrow... it's only an exhibition... you have to get it on-line :(
