The Living Room of the Future (Part the First)

futurecities.jpg

From Future Cities: Homes and Living into the 21st Century (World of the Future), a book I have promptly added to my wish list:

The picture on the right [above] takes you into the living room of the future. The basics will probably be similar—windows, furniture, carpet, and TV. There will be one big change though&Mdash;the number of electronic gadgets in use.

They weren't wrong in concept, even if the execution is a little curvy.

I've already said it before, but it bears lots of repetition: if you scanned in this sort of retro-future work I would be very grateful. I can't get enough. Maybe I should start a Flickr group? (Thanks, deepest of discoes!)

That was my favorite book when I was a kid. Every page has a duplo illustration like that. -- Rob

I owned this book!

I remember trying to find it in the depths of my stuff at my parent's place after they moved. I couldn't find it :(

I had the spanish translation of this book. Surprisingly some of the predictions were quite accurate: universal use of small sized cell phones (they were wristwatches with four antennas sticking out), and rapid prototyping machines (stereolithography).

Taschen books (HUUUGE German Publisher) puts out a ton of books including those with "paleo-future themes. I have a couple. They usually run about 10 bucks. You can find them everywhere (B&N, Urban Outfitters, etc...).

Also check out this blog:

I hate that they call them "outdated" predictions, I'd rather call them optimistic.

Wow, I had this book too. It was amazing. They had iPhone like devices in the book too, but they were watches.

When I first heard about cell phones I thought of the predictions from this book, and thought "yeah, a portable phone is good, but when are they going to add movies, video messages, music, etc?"

Ah, I wish people really were wearing mock turtle-necked unitards with racing stripes down the side and knee-high white boots. The world would be a better place.

I keep coming up with my own captions:

1. I don't get those people playing sports outside. Don't they know that, in our world of 2007, giant mutant cockroaches can smell them, are doubtless circling in to devour them even now? Or at least that's what the brain of Walter Cronkite in a jar says on the evening news.

2. Junior keeps filming our neighbor who likes to sunbathe nude. Or giant mutant cockroaches. Whatever they are, he won't show me the films, just takes them straight to the room. Maybe I should have Drinkbot talk to him.

3. Something called the Intertubes. I dunno what it is. Junior watches it all the time, but he hides the screen whenever I walk into the room.

4. Even with our holographic crystal data storage system that can store an entire megabyte of information, it's good to be able to play the phonograph records of yesteryear. Right now I'm listening to my special edition see-thru vinyl edition of the Beatles' reunion album, Ringo Needs the Money.

5. Drinkbot has been mixing 'em a twee bit stiff lately, hasn't he? I'll take a look at his settings after the next pitcher of highballs. Or not.

6. No matter what the exciting world of the twenty-first century has in store for us, there's always one thing that we can be sure of: turtlenecked velour track suits with white go-go boots will never go out of style.
