A Peek Inside the Minds of Rock Band

Damn Wired’s Chris Kohler for stealing my story about Harmonix, the creators of Guitar Hero and the upcoming Rock Band. Sure, he actually travelled to Boston to interview the team, wrote up a whole piece showing how much Harmonix loves music, and uncovered great gems like this one about David Bowie, but I had thought about doing the same piece at least once or twice while sitting around sipping beer. Prepare the lawyers, Kohler!

Eric Brosius, Harmonix’s senior sound designer, sits in his cramped office discussing one of the perks of his job — getting to listen to the original unmixed audio tracks of classic songs. He raves about the raw vocals of “Suffragette City” by David Bowie. “There’s a part where Bowie goes, ‘Aw, hit me!’ and you can hear him giggle,” Brosius gushes. “That stuff is totally fascinating.”

There is probably no game I am more excited about than Rock Band.

Hrm. I just looked at the Wikipedia article, and they don’t say whether the peripherals will be available for PS2–I really don’t want to have to buy another game console on top of the cost of the game itself. But it would be nice to have a Fender controller, and the song list is really sweet.

I was kind of horrified when I heard that MTV had bought Harmonix, and that EA would be distributing Rock Band. Then I realized anything that associates MTV with music again is probably a good thing. Then I saw how big this game was becoming, and my frothing demand for it increases.

Besides, Activision is the number one third party now, so it’s cooler to hate on them ;)
