Gateway One Computer Images Leaked

gateway_one.jpg

Although it's not supposed to be revealed until tomorrow, shots of the new Gateway One computer, an all-in-one computer vaguely like an Apple iMac, have leaked onto the net. Features-wise it's a fairly typical machine, with a 19-inch screen, slot-loading drive, and FireWire in a case less than three inches thick. I think it's rather attractive.

Say "vaguely" again.

Hey, it's black!

I think it's a fine form factor for a computer, whether Apple did it first or not, so more power to 'em, I say.

It's so much bigger than an iMac! The iMac can be VESA mounted and isn't much bigger (face-wise, not thickness-wise) than an LCD monitor. This looks like it's locked to a desktop config and is a lot taller than a monitor. Too bad - I think the all-in-one form factor has a lot of promise but lacks very many compelling executions.

It is a decent looking machine, it's just not as "good" as the iMac in my opinion.. We'll see, once it's official.

It's not sourced from the iMac. It's a copy of the Gil Amelio-era 20th Anniversary Mac. It's less ugly, but that's not hard.

Is GateWay selling the black version for a premium?

I don't really see it as a "copy" of any apple product. It has elements of other apple products (the 'stance', where the drive is) but how else are you going to design an all-in-one with an LCD monitor and not come off as copying something or another? The shape isn't like any apple product. The base gets wider at the bottom to provide a bit of sturdy-ness without extra legs or anything. It's pretty slick.

Looks nice, but it'll be interesting to see how much cable and peripheral clutter gets added onto a real version not sitting in a studio shot.

Its "vaguely" like an iMac in that it costs half as much for more computer (i.e. faster proc, more RAM, bigger HD).

Since we all know that Mac fanboys will be buy nothing that Steve Jobs has not personally blessed why don't you all just shut the hell up when it comes to non-Apple products.

Starts at $1300 with integrated Intel graphics and 1.5 Ghz Core 2 Duo. (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/pcs/gateway-one-all+in+one-pc-revealed-303988.php)
Neither half the price nor more computer than the low-end iMac.

So, the iMac's are cheaper and give you more, and look better.

Talk about a turn around for the books :)

"Less than three inches thick". I wonder if its also "Lighter than 50 kilos" and has "More than 20gb of hard drive space".

But... but...

You CAN'T TILT THE SCREEN.

Not being able to adjust the viewing angle of the monitor is a deal-killer for me, and a stunning example of stupid design.

Did it ever occur to anyone at Gateway that people (of varying heights, with varying chair and table set-ups) would actually need to be able to _use_ this computer?

Amazing.

Anonymous: I got a good look at this machine today. Not only can you not tilt the screen, there's a big, glowing Gateway logo on the front. Even worse, all the ports aren't actually on the computer, but are on a big power brick-looking thing that is meant to be put under your desk which means, yup, if you want to add in additional peripherals, you'll have to attach them to the big brick, which means it's either going to go back up on the desk, or all your stuff will go under.

It's very cool looking, though, if unwieldy.
