I Made A Talking Head Video Review: Fujitsu Lifebook U810 UMPC

I thought I’d try my hand at a video review, especially since this little UMPC is cooler in person than in pictures or words. It is interesting how annoying I am in this; I’m hoping the more I do these, however, the less grating I’ll get. But no promises! I may get worse.

That said, this isn’t going to be the standard format—nothing is more boring than a talking head, but I wanted to see how quickly I could put something like this together. (Answer: It takes far too long!)

Also, I did curse in this, because I’m a child.

i think you’re being too hard on yourself, joel. i didn’t find you annoying in this at all.

  2. spike55151 says:

    well done and very entertaining…
    keep it up!

  3. Joel Johnson says:

You’re too kind. But at least I know what I don’t like about how I did this one, which will hopefully help in the future. Such as doubling up a segment!

  4. crank says:

if the u810 is too small, try fujitsu’s p1610. it is a slightly larger version of the same thing- with a usable keyboard and larger/higher resolution screen.

    Stop Making Sense?

  6. MrfixitRick says:

yeah, the doubling hurt your ratings. hehe
You do have a straight-shootin’ kind of style and a voice that’s not hard to take. The beginning shots and overall attitude had me laughing. My only advice is “watch your eyes”, and “watch your mouth”. (No prob for me; others will complain.) On second thought perhaps I’m not the best one to give advice…I just had a comment that I my last video “has got to be the most boring one on Youtube”…sheesh!

honestly I’ve seen far worse from professional video peoples. you keep the talking head thing fairly interesting (JUMP CUTS!). but when you get right down to it you were informative and made me laugh.

  8. Mihir says:

I quite liked it! It’s like you are New York’s answer to Oxford’s Wil Harris.

Where can I subscribe to this Videocast/Podcast so I can watch it in the subway on my iPhone?

  9. maven2k says:

I liked it and would watch more of them, but what do I know, I subscribe to Dethroner (heh). Seriously, I did like it.

  10. Gareth Branwyn says:

I liked this review a lot, Joel. I say the video review thing could be a thing.

“What’s strange about the U810 is that this is exactly the device I thought I wanted about 10 years ago.”

    Exactly.

  11. AR says:

This gadget is quite awesome isn’t it ?

I thought you were going to blame the doubling up on the absence of a tab button. That would have been funny.

  13. gandy says:

Does anyone know what specific Atheros Wifi chipset this thing uses? I think it’d make a sweet little Linux system, but “Atheros SuperAG” is wonderfully unspecific and could refer to any number of different chipsets.

  14. joflow says:

I liked it. Other than the obvious doubling-up, the only other thing I think would have been helpful would be to see where exactly the oddly-placed mouse was. Besides that, better than Cats.

  15. nex says:

I’d assumed the dupe segment was an purpose and found it quite funny. With a bit of practice, you could become the next Cabel Sasser. Well, alright, what I really mean by this is: You should show the gadget in question a lot more and your face a lot less ;-p

  16. Consuegra says:

Nice review. Check out the Fujitsu P1610d (and older 1510d) for a right-sized version of the above.

  17. JV says:

That was excellent! Do more of these!

  18. joebrown says:

Well played! Keep up the good work!

  19. ianm says:

good review – showing where the awkward mouse actually was would have been nice, and the lack of a tab key seems to be a deal-breaker for me.

I’ll be in the market to actually purchase one of these types of sub-compact laptops (UMPCs) one day, so please keep me informed. The video review format is a very good way to do that too.

  20. rictic says:

I was surprised. I expected to dislike this, ’cause text is usually so superior to video, especially over talking heads. But I think it was a net win to do a video review for a device like this one, where seeing it being used and watching someone manipulate it communicated its size and affordances well.

Also, your review style was excellent. I hope you do more in the future (when reviewing things that need this kind of treatment).

  21. Moe says:

Wow, I’ve been following you since Gizmodo, and I always thought you were Asian.

  22. meegs says:

    i heart joel xxoo

  23. mralistair says:

for the size I love my new asus EEE which with it’s 7″ screen linux and a tab key is tiny but fantastic.. oh and it is less than half the price of the fujitsu.

  24. beppovox says:

haven’t find anything annoying :) keep dooing them joel

  25. tonx says:

I’m humping my LCD. This is good shit.
