Polarpak Moflow: Pressurized Hydration System

polarpak_moflow.jpgThe "Moflow" water pack from Polarpak looks like a traditional back-mounted water carrier, but the inclusion of an air pump adds two useful features: you don't have to suck on a hose to get a sip of water, as biting on the tip gives you a blast of pressurized liquid; the air pressure in the reservoir helps keep the water from sloshing around. You can add a shower head attachment as well for a little backwoods rinse down.

It looks like a wonderful addition to the standard design, but I'd worry that the little hand pump, which isn't integrated into the system, would be easily lost.

It's selling at a suggested $32, but you'll still need to purchase a backpack with a standard hydration pack slot.

I just blow into my standard Camelbak through the bite valve for the same effect. Perhaps not as long lasting, but easily renewable...

I'm skeptical that the air pressure keeps the water from sloshing around. They did design in a couple of baffles to cut down on the sloshing of water in the inflated bladder, but it seems to me that a regular hydration pack that's been filled to the cap with water will have significantly less sloshing if the user doesn't introduce air back into the bag.

One way to eliminate sloshing all together would be to have two bladders. An inner bladder for water, and an outer bladder for air. Going off of Jakoblah's technique, you could put a one way valve in the drinking hose. When you suck, you draw water. When you blow, you inflate the outer bladder.

I'm not sure the hassle of having to continually re-pressurize bladder is worth the minor convenience of not having to suck on the tube.

Might be OK for hiking, but I can't see it for any kind of racing.

Back when I could ride (too much knee damage to comfortably ride any more), I would have loved one of these. I can see the shortcomings, but as a semi-casual rider who would go on easy but lengthy rides, this still would have been handy.

I agree with scuba sm; air pressure alone wouldn't stop sloshing.
