Nostalgia Break: Wing Commander Blueprint Scans

wc1scimitarblueprint.jpg

I was looking through some old paperwork and found my original Wing Commander blueprint for the Hornet fighter (as well as a copy of "Space Piston Magazine" from Space Quest IV). I started to scan them in before realizing, Hey, I bet the internet is more on the ball than I am.

Lo, and behold: a full set of fairly high-resolution scans of all four blueprints, including my all-time favorite, the Scimitar Medium-Class Fighter.

I used to love the Wing Commander series. I built an entire cockpit for myself out of a refrigerator box, wired up a few non-functional switches and placed the whole thing over my computer so I could play in darkness. I even taped a faux heads-up display to the clear face mask of my Photon helmet (a Laser Tag knock-off) and tore out the padding on the side to wire in headphones.

Why, oh why do you do this to me? This pic made my heart pang-- Wing Commander is my all time favorite computer game. When I was a kid, I drew replicas of the cockpit from memory, with every single dial and readout exactly where it should be.

PS The Scimitar sucked.

Wow. You were lucky. We had to pretend we had a refrigerator box when I was a kid.

And that was so we could pretend we were in the cockpit of the Space Angel, so we could only move our lips.

Oooh. I used to have these, thanks for bringing back the memories. I used to play through Wing Commander, making sure to get perfect kills on every mission. I always loved the great space pilot bar you got to hang out in between missions, too.

Computer games used to come with the best manuals and goodies. The last game I remember coming with a great manual was Fallout 1 & 2.

Why did they have to name the two last fighters Raptor and Rapier? Couldn't they have thought of two words that didn't share 66% of their letters?

You could pretend?

I was only a child back then but I think I actually shed a tear when I finally finished Wing Commander II. Great games. Thanks for this post.
