Spyderco Byrdrench is Literal Multitool

byrdwrench.jpgThe "Byrdrench" is a crazy multitool from Spyderco with slip joint pliers, a crescent wrench, and a screwdriver built into one side, with a full-sized, detachable pocket knife built into another, And it even has a place inside the tool to hold extra bits for the screwdriver, which seems like a better system than the way Leatherman does it. (I never wear the extra pouch full of bits unless I think I'm going to be away from civilization for a while.)

Street prices start around $55.

I want to point out a couple of things you missed about the wrench:
First, it comes apart. This is awesome because the wrench winds up on one side and the screwdriver on the other, so you can (as you often have to) hold the bolt steady and (ahem) screw.
Secondly, the bits for the screwdriver are standard hex bits, instead of Leathman's proprietary size. I have long held that as Leatherman's biggest fault.
Thirdly- i have handled one of these, and they are *heavy* i mean, the Leatherman wave is on the limit of what i want in my pocket all the time, but it's so damn useful that i do. I have handled one of these, and they are way past that limit. A great thing for your glovebox, perhaps, but once you've crossed that threshold you might as well have full sized versions.

Are these $55 street prices for some mythic informal market I'm not privy to? The MSRP on the article clocks the tool at $125.

Yay for Spyderco. They really are superb knives -- I've been carrying around a Delica or a Poliwog for years now.

Street prices: they're often much lower than Spyderco's MSRP. For instance, their MSRP for the Poliwog is $150; I got mine for $80.

The detachable knife is a great idea. I had to give up on my multitool several years ago when security mania took over the country. Here in DC you pretty much can't go indoors with a pocket knife in your possession.

Joel: I never wear the extra bit pouch for my Leatherman either. I have the standard issue nylon case with stretchy sides, and I can fit both sets of extra bits, a mini Sharpie, and my Leatherman without any appreciable extra bulk.

I agree with CMDowns, best price I could find was about $75. If I found one for $55 including shipping I'd buy it immediately.
