Six Ugliest Space LEGO Sets

set1593.jpg

Dan Rutter gets in on the LEGO fun with this collection of god-awful designs that plagued the LEGO Space catalog in the last couple of decades. For as good as many LEGO models have been, there were the occasional turds.

Ol' 1593, here, I think suffered from New Elements Syndrome. It's like a bunch of new pieces came off the assembly line and the designers just started slapping them on like mad.

I haven't purchased a lego set in many moons, but I've always enjoyed your posts on (and fondness for) them.

This, however, is blowing my mind. Fuzzy memories from my childhood are flooding back to me as I suddenly remember that I owned that set (#1593) as a kid! I can see how it might look ugly today, but back then, it was one of the greatest toys I possessed. (Right up there with my G.I. Joe Sky Striker.) I must have created over one hundred different ships from that one set...

So I thank you, Joel, for unknowingly giving me access to these memories -- memories that had been locked away, untouched, and collecting dust in my noggin for at least twenty years.

I had that Robo Stalker model. I don't remember it being nearly that ugly. Also, even if it is ugly, it's still a good set toy-wise. The head comes off and is a stand-alone space craft, similar to Mazinger Z. Fun to play with, even if it is ugly.

Also, castle is way better than space.

*sigh* I owned all three of those ugly spaceships. Back in my day you had to use your IMAGINATION when you played with your Legos. Kids these days are so spoiled with all their special pieces. We had rectangular bricks, and we loved them! We used to YEARN for a 3x1x1 slanty piece. YEARN!!!

I had the first three, and I loved them all. The "special pieces" took over and I've found LEGO much less interesting since then -- it become more of a 3D puzzle and less of a encouragement to tinker.

The pieces of RoboGuardian are currently strewn across my living room floor.

I owned all but one of those. They seemed a lot cooler back then.

Yesterday when I saw this post I was so impressed by the coolness of the LEGOLAND SPACE boxes that I dind't read the title "ugliest Space Lego boxes"...

Wow!

These sets were revolutionary back than since for the first time LEGO produced elements that allowed us to create more complicate space battleships.

"New Elements Syndrome" is a luddite statment started in the 80s by older kids who couldn't accept that their Lego World was changing!

I agree with you, KLUV. It may look horrible now, but those old school space Legos were the shit. I got hours upon hours of enjoyment out of those things as a kid.
