Renault Megane Concept Coupe’s Insectoid Doors

Renault’s “Megane” coupe concept, currently being feted at the Geneva Auto Show, eschews gullwing doors for the far-more-futuristic dragonfly doors. Don’t expect them to make it into the production cars, but they’re certainly beautiful.

Very similar were the doors on Marcello Gandini’s 1967 Lamborghini Marzal concept:

Which became the Espada 2+2 coupé (sans the brilliant doors):

Ugh. The surest sign that a concept vehicle will never make production is when it has driver and passenger doors hinged anywhere except at the leading edge.

There is a reason we have been making cars this way for 100 years. Most of the other methods for hanging car doors are dangerous or impractical.

I had a friend who owned a gull wing equipped Bricklin in the eighties. If you opened the door when it was raining (or if the door was wet for any other reason) you got about 1/2 a gallon of water dumped on your head.

There was a story in the paper a couple of years ago about some guy getting trapped in 300K Lamboghini because of an electrical short.
