Video: "I Love My Mac" Music Video

Speaking as a daily Mac user myself, kudos to this lovely young woman Tonya who has completely captured the ethos and spirit of the average Mac user. Mac users can be dorky, too, haters!

I have been a PC guy for most of my life, but recently I started using a MacBook pro. It's a solid machine, well designed, and I love the break-off power jack. However, there is 1 thing that constantly turns me off of Mac; the Mac lifestyle.

No offense meant to this lady. I have no issues with her or her geekery. I am a geek, I do tech support for a living. However, while I concede the handsome and functional design, I don't look forward to the Mac virus singularity that I see rapidly approaching. As the number of macs on the market rises there is a point at which the return on investment for virus/malware/spyware/etc. writers will become sufficient to impel them to start targeting macs. And I'd suggest that when your average dumbass on the street has a mac in his den, it won't "just work" as often.

What bothers me about Macs? The commercials. The programming that Mac users receive that makes them accept a Macintosh's idiosyncrasies. The fact that the "delete" key is backspace and that there's no ACTUAL delete key (I realize there is probably some shortcut to do this. If anyone can help me out, I'd love to know it). The unproven claims of robustness and reliability. When I see a 5 year old mac chugging away at a point-of-sale running an out of date OS and not being repeatedly borked by the 1 employee who's too dumb to live, then I'll start to believe the hype.

However, in the meantime, if I could never see another Apple ad, I could enjoy my new laptop a lot more. It's the branding that turns me off.

I want to buy a computer, not a lifestyle.

PS - Sorry about the long, off topic comment. The video was cute and I admire her enthusiasm.

First things first. The 'delete' function on a MacBook Pro is function-delete. I know this because I use it all the time. As a recent convert myself, the shortcut I am looking for is usually not too hard to guess, but I wish it was a little more consistent in using the function or Apple key as the modifier.

Now, onto my actual comment. While I enjoyed the video immensely, that first video filter she uses should be banned by international treaty.

If she actually loves/loved all those Mac's then she's hardly a "young women" anymore...

But the video is the normal idiocy of fanboys for whatever system/tool/sex toy.

As repulsive as Linux advocates who illegally download music/apps/...

As a user of Macs, Windows, Linux, and for that matter IBM punch-card systems, I just want to point out that nobody makes songs like this about PCs. This Means Something.

That is an entire museum's worth of macs!

Things I love about this (as a Mac user). I've spent 20 minutes arguing with the writer of iScrobbler about a major usability change that went out with a new minor point release. Safari was very crashy until about 10.5.2, and I don't even really know if they changed anything Sarari related because the RN's are so vague compared to Linux vendors.

When she's singing about AppleTalk, she appears to be holding Ethernet cables rather than the bonehead Mini-DIN Appletalk cables. Which is good, because those sucked.

Unless she's very short, I never really realized how big the Cube actually was. I don't care, I don't care about the heating and performance problems, it was still super cool at the time and I had major cube envy.

@ #1:
You're not buying a lifestyle with a Mac. As a switcher from Linux there's still plenty, PLENTY, that annoys me in my day-to-day stuff because it's not customizable in exactly the ways I want. However it's the best compromise between Linux and "Anything my wife wants to use", meaning Adobe CS3, etc. Personally, every time I go into the Mac store for repairs (which is too often for my tastes), I just want to punch someone.

Bringing us to "hardware just working". My scanner (Canon Canoscan 1250u el-cheapo) just doesn't work. Cisco mailed me a free webcam the other day. That doesn't work. It's a Logitech. I find it unfathomable that the most popular webcam manufacturer on the planet isn't supported. I know a lot of that is due to the manufacturer (like my scanner), but it works JUST FINE in SuSE 10.3.

So yeah, rose colored glasses and all, fun video and fun girl for producing it. I drooled over the SE-30 my computer teacher had when we all had "make do" with Mac Pluses, and still wish I could get my hands on some of the gear she had in the vid.

It's the Apple Kool Aid that the pc nerds find most irritating. They have this amazing mythology, which I'm sure makes the envy of the rest of the IT industry.

But to my point:

I think Apple far too often take advantage of their relatively secure fanbase, and release shoddy and poorly tested updates, and products with catastrophic hardware faults with unacceptably poor customer service when the owner of a an extended warranty unit returns for the umpteenth time for repair.

In short, I think Apple (and their resellers) in many ways is it's own worst enemy, as they often stymie the good work that they do.

The proof is, as they say, in the pudding. Generally speaking, Apple make okay puddings. The packaging is a bit flashier than the product. More bang and less wizz please Apple.

Good on the crazy lady for making the dorky video! With this kind of product love, you've gotta be sending the lady a present Apple!

PATRICK NIELSEN HAYDEN: Your comment is absolutely spot on and sheds more light on the discussion than just about anyone else.

I agree with your point but: Never say "Nobody"

Readers here should know that my wife and I created this video for a contest held by producers of the documentary "MacHeads the Movie". We certainly weren't sitting around and decided to make a fan-boy video out of the blue. Kudos to my wife for agreeing to start in it.

As for the AppleTalk comment, yes, those are ethernet cables but AppleTalk is a protocol and not a particular type of hardware cabling so I elected to use colorful ethernet cables rather than some beige serial cables.

Dude, you're married to a woman that is willing to sing about computers? Sister?

Randy: I'm afraid singing's just not your thing.
Paula: I'm going to have to agree - you're just not right for this competition.
Simon: No, sorry.

Patrick Nielsen Hayden is a sane, reasonable man who's married to a Mac head. I love my Mac. That video was eloquent and expressive and altogether swell, except for the filter.

Patrick saw the video before I did, so he called me into his home office and had me watch it. "I'm not sure what the dog has to do with it," he murmured when we got to that part.

"It's because it's Her Mac and Her Dog," I said.

Patrick started laughing.

"It make perfect sense!" I insisted. "If I had made that video about My Mac, it would have had My Hamster in it."

By then Patrick was laughing so hard his face turned red. I'm still not sure why.

I work at an Apple Store. It´s my job to sell Macs, but this video just makes me feel embarrassed... :)

No one sings gospel tunes about atheism, either. Being a cynic is just not as fun as being a true-believer.

Brand loyalty is for suckers. If the Mac is the better tool for the job, by all means use the Mac... but loyalty is something you feel towards other human beings, not corporate entities. Rest assured that the shareholders of Apple have no great feelings of love or loyalty toward you.

So what is the ethos and spirit of the average Mac user? Singing in public even though you suck at it?

I know I shouldn't expect this to be death metal or gangsta rap, but singing about how dependable something is just isn't very rock and roll.

I did not even have to think about it: Yes.

Wow. I've used about 1/3 of the things shown or sang about in this video, and used to be a fan of them. And I did and do appreciate how easy it is to use special characters & symbols for other languages on the things (Claris anyone?). But since a close family member has done a lot of business for future ventures with the fellas of Cupertino, only to have it all erased six months later due to change of CEO, it is a little difficult to be a fan now.
