Spielberg to make live-action 3D 'Ghost in the Shell' movie

Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks has acquired the rights to 'Ghost in the Shell,' reports Variety, to be made into a 3D live-action movie. Above, the intro to the original anime movie (based on an earlier manga), which includes quite a bit of cartoon female nudity. Should be a corker. Even bad Spielberg sci-fi movies are fun to watch once.

No. No, no, no. Seriously, no. [head explodes]

I guess the adaptation was inevitable. Would have been great if James Cameron could have had a go at it, or maybe even the Wachowskis who made a whole trilogy inspired by/ripped off from it.

But I guess Spielberg is acceptable. Minority Reports wasn't half bad, and the mid part of AI had a bit of the appropriate cyberpunkish mood.

At least it's not Uwe Boll...

Spielberg is unacceptable.

The original manga is by Masamune Shirow with the two films by Mamoru Oshii. The combination of Shirow's cyberpunk procedural format and philosophy combined with Oshii's mastery of politics and surrealism produced two remarkable movies and three great series.

Both films, and particularly the second one, are continually contemplating what it means to be human and what the limits of knowledge are. In particular, consider the visit to the Kim's mansion in the second film:

A combination of mindbending imagery coupled with a wide ranging philosophical debate merging eastern and western worldviews. This is about as far from Spielberg's feelgood pablum as possible.

Monopole -- did you see AI or Minority Report? It's not likely that he'll make E.T. or Indiana Jones out of it.

Still, I'm underwhelmed at the idea of a remake, the movies are already beautiful and a redo is not likely to make them any better.

#2: cameron is currently working on a Battle angel alita movie.

And i seriously hope that the GITS movie sticks to either the original manga or Stand alone complex's versions of the Major, where she actually shows some emotion , unlike Oshii's version which is in my opinion, a dull emotionless robot

in my opinion this is fantastic; Speilberg is one of the few in hollywood who has the capacity to "get it".

I think this is a good story for Spielberg. He's at his best with depressing futuristic dystopias. Think AI. Nobody does grim fatalism prettier than Spielberg. His style of visual imagery suits this well. Throw in some of the people who did amazing work on Minority Report and you could have a really fine film. There's no rule that a Hollywood adaptation of something from another culture automatically sucks (although *usually*...)

@8 Come on. It's not like Spielberg was remaking Citizen Kane in pig Latin with hand puppets. It was a great graphic series that was made into a very good movie and a good movie. When he options the Mona Lisa for a doormat I'll get outraged.

oh no....the whole world is based in Japan imagined during the 80's. I hope he won't butcher it, like changing the setting to US or have some big name HK actor for an "Asian" role (shivers).

Aw no f**in way. In the immortal words of Tony Harrison:
"This, my friends, is an outrage!"

The time: the future
The place: New New York
The cast:
Michael Douglas (batou)
Tom Cruise (togusa)
Katherine Zeta-Jones (major kusanagi)
Saito...

Oh.. I've made a sick on me desk.
