All AT&T phones $0.01 on Amazon today only

51iG2txOuUL._SL500_AA280_.jpgIf you're looking for a new phone and not adverse to jumping cellular motherships, Amazon is having a deal today only: every single one of their phones only costs a penny, today only.

The caveat: when they say every single phone, they don't mean the iPhone. Other caveat: you will, of course, have to sign up for a two-year AT&T contract. But there's plenty of new phones — including some Blackberries and SmartPhones. And if you play your rebates right, you can even make $150.00 by the time you get your phone. Hey, every little bit helps to counter the contract hell that is the state of the American cell phone market.

Oh, wow.... this even includes the Palm Treo (under $0 after rebate) and the Palm Centro is actually $0.01!!! Yes, the iPhone is nice, but the ability to run all the software I'm already used to would be great!

The fact that I still can't get the Centro from a carrier in Canada over 7 months after release (while the U.S. has both CDMA and GSM versions) suggests that the state of the U.S. cell phone market could be even worse.

Don't fall for it!

After multiple experiences with AT&T, I vowed I would never let pass an opportunity to steer people away from these crooks and liars! They are evil incarnate. Do business with AT&T and you will be sorry! You are better off building your own damn phone company than trying to get a fair shake our of AT&T.

Don't believe me? Check the web.

(There, I've done my good deed for the day!)

Arrrggghhhh - why is it that right after i buy a new anything, it goes on sale for next to nothing immediately after?!?!? Oh well - i didn't really feel like switching service anyway, but i just paid $100 for a new phone...

Unfortunately, in an effort to push us toward signing up for the yearly plans, over-the-counter prices on cell phones have been kept artificially high. Sure, if I paid $30/month rather than $100/year on a per-minute prepay plan, they would be delighted to use some of the extra profit to "give" me a fancy new phone... but that pricing model isn't really a net win for either me or the networks; it discourages my upgrading, which discourages me from burning (and paying for) more minutes.

Grump, grump, grump.

(For what it's worth, T-Mobile seems to have the best prepaid plan right now. Of course that's subject to change at any moment.)

Ah At&T, one company who was in full support of Bush's wiretapping program. Who handed over tons of your personal information to the government. Without a subpoena.

I bailed on AT&T and joined Credo Mobile instead, a company that cares enough to donate a portion of it's profits to progressive causes. They are on the Sprint network which is not as good, but sometimes you have to take a step down in order to stand up for what you believe.

But, hey, if you're ideals bought out by a 1 cent phone...

Yeah Yeah, I know there are problems, but I want an awesome phone now!

Does anyone know if I can get this if my current AT&T contract doesn't expire until September? I'd love to get a smart phone, instead of the dumb one I have now! I'd even sell the next 2 years of my life!

Here's what you'll be agreeing to if you take advantage of this offer:

"Conditional $250 Discount

The Price listed above for this phone includes an instant $250 discount from Amazon.com. You agree to repay this $250 discount to Amazon.com if, during the six-month period following the activation date or renewal date of your existing contract, you: (1) fail to pay your balance due each month on time; (2) fail to maintain your account in good standing; (3) disconnect the line of service; (4) transfer the phone to another line of service; (5) change your service rate plan, including canceling or removing required PDA, BlackBerry, or smartphone features after your product has shipped; or (6) use this line of service to replace an existing account with the carrier. The discount is available only if you are activating a new non-substitute line of service or extending an existing line of service. If you do not follow these rules, you authorize Amazon.com to charge your credit card $250 as reimbursement of the discount without need for further approval."

I was SO tempted by this, and I looked at the Amazon page about 20 times today. But I just couldn't pull the trigger. I really want a nice, shiny new smart phone, and they even had a couple 3G models on there. My wife has an iphone and we are already on a two year deal with ATT. I am using a pre-pay, cheapo Virgin cell phone. I couldn't figure out from the site whether we could get a decent deal on extending our existing contract with ATT while adding a second phone. (You had to sign up for a plan right there in the Amazon checkout).

So, I passed. Oh well, I hope I didn't lose out on a good deal, but I guess I'd rather talk to a person before I sign up for a 2 year commitment.
