The $12,000 UFO CD Player

ufo-cd_ubwa1_48.jpg

Chinese company Shanling’s CD-T300 Pro CD player has the bright LED display and fluorescent glow of a spinning UFO. It’s neat looking. I dig it. sure, I don’t really need a CD player much, but I’d put down fifty bucks or so for that. What’s half a bill for a conversation piece? Unfortunately, that’s 2400 times less than the money Shanling is asking: they want an astonishing $12,000 dollars for a CD Player. That’s like wanting ten grand for a Walkman. All I’m saying: a $12,000 CD Player must have the minimum functionality of allowing you to skip forward and backwards in time by pushing the track skip buttons. Otherwise, it’s not worth the money.

I agree, the Shanling is a joke. At $12,000 it pales in comparison to the 5000 Signature DAC and Model 2000 transport for a combined price of $43,000.00+.

    2400 * $50 = $120,000

    240 * $50 = $12,000

And while I’m picking nits, “240 times less than” would mean the cd player costs 241 times as much.

In this case, it is just picking nits, but it really drives me nuts when I hear something “increased by 180%”. I know what that means, but I also know that they probably *meant* that it increased *to* 180% of its previous value.

Wurp, you’re right, not sure how I made the mistake. And I wasn’t actually all that happy with the “less than” phrasing myself. I’ll let it all stand though, as a testament to my idiocy. Like you guys needed another!

  4. wurp says:

I have to say you’re a class act, John. I had nothing but criticism in my post, and you have nothing but congeniality in your response.

I do love the stuff you guys put up here… I just tend not to post unless I have something more to add than “hyuk, hyuk, cool!”

Wurp, most commenters never come out of the wood work unless they are saying “Actually…” It’s just a rule of blogging. This is fine: we’re glad to hear from people regardless, and fair’s fair — I fucked up. Thanks for that sweet response, though!

I would say most commenters *on BoingBoing* tend to not come out of the woodwork unless they are correcting…

I see plenty of forums (fora?) where most of the posts appear to come from mentally handicapped fourteen year olds, barely able to operate a keyboard, with nothing more to contribute than a fart joke or a “meee 2!”

  7. DMcK says:

Man, that thing just screams “Sharper Image catalog”, don’t it?

maybe they use those blue LEDs that run a blu-ray player, that would really be ironic.

    What’s a CD player?

  10. Wingo says:

This is awesome. I’m gonna get one and put it next to my Beamz® Laser Music System.

  11. Gainclone says:

Shanling is OK. They have a really nice CD player and Headphone amp combo which is nice, but vastly overpriced. When it comes to CD players though, the first-run playstation is still the best I’ve ever heard. Even in systems that have a net cost in the hundreds of thousands.

It’s amazing the kind of sound you can get on the cheap. Shanling is definitely NOT “the cheap.”

    GAINCLONE:
I recently modded a SCPH-1001 PS1 for my main system. My Toshiba HD-A3 HD-DVD player is handig it its backside so far. I’ll do a linear regulated PS mod & if that doesn’t make the angels sing it’s off to the gear closet for it.
BTW, have you heard LM4780′s yet? I have both paralleled and bridged. 120W/chip. Pretty cool for $7/chip.

    ROSSINDETROIT:
I had that very Toshiba! I returned it, though, because I knew HD-DVD was a dead thing, and I liked the idea of a simple upscaler better.

Haven’t heard the LM4780. Is that the 60 Watt?

If you’re really in Detroit, you should check out the AKfest from AudioKarma this Saturday and Sunday.

I think it’s gonna be sweet!

  14. Gainclone says:

Oh yeah! BoingBoing should be covering AKFest! It’s a sweet audio festival, BoingBoing Gadgets needs some press representation there! Hop on the Livonia, MI audio festivals bandwagon!

  15. ROSSINDETROIT says:

I was the AK Speakers forum mod a few years ago & still hang there when I have the time/patience, as Bauhausler.
Drop me a PM @ AK. I live by the Zoo.
I’ll be @ the Fest on Fri & Sat. Not exhibiting this year, though. I’ll shoot a lot of pix.
The LM4780 = 2 X LM3875 on one chip. See Jack Walton’s projects on Tech-Diy for details. I use his boards & circuits.

If it weren’t so ungodly expensive, it would make a nice centerpiece to this scale model TARDIS I’m building…
