Gallery of shipping container data centers

Royal Pingdom has a few images from the inside of portable data centers, the sort used by Sun and Google to drop massive computing power anywhere they can send a shipping container. I would like to hang a hammock inside and make one my new nest.

Um. These shipping container computer centers are more than just "used by Sun Microsystems". They're MADE by Sun Microsystems.

Don't forget your gasmask if you want to sleep in there - what's the ventilation like? What kind of nasties slowly leak out of all that plastic and heavy metal?

The image in the post is not of a Sun system, it is a Rackable system (http://www.rackable.com/). In fact, it appears to be an image taken directly from the company website.

yeah that's a rackable unit. i spent three days inside one with two portable space heaters and a lot of coffee. actually, quite peaceful once you get used to the noise and cold.

Back in the '90s we were building small factories in containers. We did a full hard drive factory for one of the big three - complete w/ ultraclean assembly space & support areas. One container for power, air, filtration, three for assembly. Cool fun, the space has limits that force creativity and solutions that would never occur if you were working in a normal space.

Saddam Hussein had one of these for running his mobile Nuclear Lab. Not!
