From rendering to reality: Asus’s desktop Eee PC

Spot the difference! Granted, it’s not the most flattering of photographs. But the journey from Maya to the material plane is clearly one of compromise. Engadget puts it bluntly: The Eee desktop looks “noticeably worse than the concept preceding it.”

The Eee Box, as it shall be known, is still prettier than the smaller Dells and HPs. At 2.2 pounds, it has Intel’s Atom CPU, a gig of RAM and an 80GB hard drive. It’ll run Linux, and, if they want to sell any of them, be a lot cheaper than the Mac Mini.

I think it looks pretty good. the oval metal base is a bit “shit nightclub chic” anyway..

I hope the ‘art’ is removable.

It looks like a Mac Mini crossed with a Wii. I have to say, the designer didn’t exactly reach far for inspiration here.

    < $100 or FAIL

Who cares how it looks, tell me how it runs. Especially if you expect it to be cheaper than a mac mini.

  5. toxonix says:

No, that’s a less than symbol! As in it better be less than $100, or its gonna fail.

Aside from the stand, and the …unique… side art, what, exactly, is different?

I think the differents in the whites of the actual box as compared to the concept may be as simple as a camera with poor white balancing.

I still don’t think I’d mind having one around.

Apart from the stand, the way the plastic panels meet up looks pretty nasty from the photo. It’s the same thing as in the render … it just doesn’t seem to fit together all that well.
