Sony Vaio Mouse talk makes a VoIP phone out of your mouse

vaiomousetalk.jpgOn one hand, Sony's new Vaio mouse is hideous. On the other, it's got the most ingenious secondary use: if your Skype buddy rings you, you can simply pick it up and start talking into it... it's also a VoIP phone. $84.99 makes it pricey for such an ergonomic monstrosity, but if this feature came out on a better mouse, I'd instantly take the leap: I'm sick of frantically wrestling with my headset every time a Skype call comes in.

Scotty-"Computer... Computer... (McCoy hands Scotty the mouse) Aye. Hello computer."

G'vnr Nichols-"Just use the keyboard."

Scotty-"Keyboard. How quaint."

anyone else immediately think of this?

Ummm...and if you need to use the mouse while talking? Do you then just roll it across your face?

That looks profoundly uncomfortable to use. Thankyou, Sony, for form over function.

#2: Silicon sunset, I did. I just couldn't remember which movie I saw it from.

And the rolling across the face was just plain funny Agraham. No scheduling of appointments while on a Skype call with this mouse.

Does it have call waiting or do you have to use the keyboard for the other ear? I hear you hang up by unplugging the computer.

What's up with Sony lately?

SiliconSunset, absolutely. But I was just going to say "Is it made of transparent aluminum?!"

Which brings me to the biggest plot failure in that movie: why do they need to see the whales? If aluminum is strong enough, why not just put in regular, non-transparent aluminum? You don't need to have an observation deck when you're transporting aquatic creatures in an emergency situation. Geek sigh.

So if you use this, when you are on a skype call you cant use your mouse for mousing? Also I'd guess that the optical detection will react to hair or faces or gas masks or whatever is attached to the users shoulders and theres also a high chance of accidental clicking.

Nice try Sony but no tasty cigar for you.

Kinda brings "talk to the hand" home, doesn't it?

This thing's actually been out for quite a while. Here's a review of it I did for the Skype Gear blog:
