I rather like the this portable Japanese iPod dock by einö. No idea on the sound quality, of course (my guess is rather tinny, just by dint of being portable), but it has a certain allure in the combination of jet age sleekness and Famicom-like juxtaposition between cranberry plastic and bright yellow buttons on the side. Around $56 in yen.

That speaker grille metal is awesome. The color and punch-out shape are pure jet-age.
Can someone explain to me the benefit of reproducing “stereo” in a device this small, where separation is impossible? Why not just combine L+R and use a bigger mono speaker? 50% of my Ipod tracks are pre-stereo anyways, so I don’t care, but still? Why pretend? Even the nasty little $4.99 ones on Ebay pretend to be stereo….
I ordered this in black on Tuesday, and it’s just been delivered. Sound-wise it’s pretty good, only a touch of tinniness, and it has some bass as well. As for volume, I’ve only been brave enough to go a little past half way, I don’t want to scare my neighbours (my walls are paper thin though). Nice carry case too.
I dunno, those newer micro drivers have much smoother and more balanced sound than older paper cone speakers of the same size.
Certainly lacking in bass, but still not “tinny” like you might expect.
