1949 Portland Pullmain railcar converted into sleek mobile apartment

The latest episode of current shows a fantastic retro-fitting of a vintage 1949 Portland Pullman railcar into a swank, modern apartment… which also has the benefit of being mobile, as it can be hitched to any cargo train and hauled across the country for an affordable $1.50 a mile. There were plans to tag the outside of the railcar, but they had to be scrapped when neighboring hobos complained of the declining real estate values that would engender.

That funny – I used to bike by that thing every day!

It is located right behind OMSI, to the south-east of the Hawthorne bridge. Here it is on the map.

that is wonderful. I wanted to do something like that when I was younger… still do, actually.

This is the next best thing to refitting a refrigeration shipping container. I love it.

This is all kinds of awesome. Sort of like houseboats only with an extra serving of awesome.

Now that it’s known that one can rent sidings with electricity and DSL and get cars shipped around the American railway network, I wonder how many other people will try this; perhaps we’ll see an entire new subculture of boho hobos, or even bobo hobos?
