The Super Soaker, introduced in 1989, already has a long history of redesign and refinement. Enthusiast site iSoaker has charts tracking the evolution of the backyard battler's weapon of choice.
The squirt gun was patented in the United States in 1899 by Gustav Reimann as an "instrument for squirting liquids to be used principally by cyclists to ward off dogs or highway robbers."
I recommend a handheld sprayer. They're cheap, easy to find, and hold plenty of water. Well pumped, it'll shoot about 20 feet, but that might be hackable by carefully expanding the tip? I use mine for killing garden bugs, but can still spray people since I just use Dr Bronner's and water for that (about 1:16 kills almost anything surprisingly quickly). Just don't use it on people if you ever use real poison in it, of course.
He who controls the water hose controls the field.

Love the "military and space" tag.
call me old fashioned, but all deference to the super-soaker aside, i always loved water weenies.
