Pocket sundials, for all your postapocalyptic timekeeping needs

Close and constant proximity to high technology takes its toll: after getting rid of a smartphone, the tempation to replace it with something basic, like a $15 pay-as-you-go Tracfone, is strong. Bonus: queuing outside the Tracfone store for half an hour before it opens on Friday morning could to satisfy the gods of cosmic perversion.

Low-tech gets sexed up with these pocket sundials in Oobject’s roundup. Many are beautiful, and some are startling in their complexity and utility, such as this 1922 scouting model, the Ansonia Sunwatch. Get one now, before the zombies take over!

Pictured are ones on display at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, from the justified sinner’s photostream.

To avoid heartbreak and tardiness, always make sure the angle of your sundial’s gnomon matches your latitude.

I decided this spring that I want a sundial on my tombstone.
