HP Voodoo Envy packaged like luxury chocolates

voodoo2.jpg voodoo3.jpg

The new HP Voodoo Envy isn't getting quite the buzz that the MacBook Air got, despite being technically a bit thinner, but if there's one area HP has managed to trump Apple, it's in packaging. Just disgustingly beautiful: the cream-and-cocoa box with pumpkin interior, the little triangular notch, the sensuous microfiber slip cover. It looks more like a box of rare, luxurious chocolates than packaging for a laptop. Comparatively, anything Apple sells looks like it was just puked into an old, curdled milk carton.

That reminds me of the wonderful box-in-a-box-in-a-box packaging of the Zunes (the Originals series, I think - the regular ones came in a double-nested variety).

I love when people real effort into packaging.

Definitely nice packaging, but hasn't Apple won lots of praise for its packaging in the past? I remember lots of applause over the ipod packaging.

Is the laptop black or that same nice cocoa color?

As a designer, I find the packaging appealing. Also, as a designer, I find the packaging excessive and wasteful.

Apple's packaging-- on the outside supports their brand image. On the inside, the packaging is spare and efficient.

The gadget is the thing, not the styrofoam/PP blocks.

What's cool about this is that the packaging doesn't seem to be all that excessive either. Instead of a disposable cushioning wrapper you get a reusable slip cover. The box looks like something I'd hold on to as well; much nicer than the corrugated cardboard you get with other computers even if it's shipped in another box.

@ IRBeej: "Excessive"? "Wasteful"? It's a box with a microfiber pouch and a computer inside. This is LESS wasteful than any other computer packaging I've opened (and I've opened a LOT). And I see no sign of styrofoam.

I'm seeing tasteful colors, simple design and construction, out of recyclable (perhaps recycled?) materials. And a nice soft pouch to keep your computer in or wipe it off with, and you can stuff it in your pocket when you're using the computer.

All in all, very tidy and compact, and just enough to do the job without going overboard.

Similar to the Zune packaging (and coloring). Looks great.

Oh puhleeze! A little overblown, much?

The logo reminds me of Shepard Fairey's work.

Oh good god, this looks obscene. I feel like I should delete my cookies after looking at the product page. Or at least take a cold shower.

The first few minutes trying to delete the crapware and configuring the mega-bloated Vista OS should wipe away any pleasant memories of your un-boxing experience.

That's just... sexy.
Half the fun of getting something new (for me, anyway), is opening it. Such decadent packaging makes me feel... naughty.

as a designer, i agree it's dead sexy. but i also agree with #4 -- apple is pretty good about not OVER packaging, too.

Artbot has it.

It's a shame, really. The package designers have put together this beautiful enclosure to hold the fine, precision product of some excellent industrial designers and engineers... all to run Windows Vista.

It actually makes me kind of sad.

Wow, that is one sweet notebook (I just looked at the Voodoo page). What a great platform for *nix. If you could get drivers for all the hardware features imagine how flippin' awesome it'd be.

Now imagine it on Vista. Yeah. I know.

hopefully its been tweaked and does not come with all sorts of crap running like most Laptops do these days. At least it does not come with Norton installed that's a start (you get a year AVG pro aparantly)

if they have got Vista running right and it can with the hardware it will look and run good. It would be a travesty to put fugly XP on it.
