Join the guerilla drive-in revolution

Retro-Thing charmingly posts on a subculture I didn't even know existed: renegade drive-in movie guerillas, who zoom around the country on their vintage hogs, 16mm projectors mounted in the sidecar, to flagrantly violate film copyright law on the blank wall of any out-of-business shoe mall or condemned retirement castle.

There are lots of these somewhat secret groups that put on clandestine impromptu drive-in movies. Once you know the secret handshake (I'm barely kidding), you'll get an email or a text message notifying you of the time and place of the drive-in - often that same day!. The location can be an old warehouse, a rooftop, or the side of a garage somewhere. LCD technology makes it easy to enjoy a high quality film presentation just about anywhere.

RT points out the excellent site Mobmov as a tool to hooking-in to guerilla drive-in events in your area.

I was honored to meet the folks at MAW, or Minneapolis Art on Wheels (or, as their hand-printed flyers [one of which is proudly hanging, framed, in my office] said, on "Wheeels!") at the 01SJ event.

Bicycle + trailer + projector + generator + cool 3-d art videos + side of building = cool

The GRL folks worked with the MAW folks for large-scale digital graffiti art on wheels.

The MAW folks traveled across the country, splashing buildings with their art. Old-school road trip for the art student set!

Could someone please teach me that handshake? This is a hobby I could take up with a little advice.

I'll be picky just this once: BMW motorcycles aren't referred to as a Hog.

Much like Mr. Furious says from Mystery Men, "It's Harley compatible."

That is all.

"Harley Compatible?"

I respond thusly:

Q: What is the difference between a Harley Davidson and an old dog?
A: The dog can get in the back of the pickup by itself.

Anyhow, Motorcycle Clique Jousting aside, the other nitpick is that we actually don't break copyright law in the West Chester Guerilla Drive-In (that's my BMW rig in the picture above.) We license our 16MM prints from Swank, and they're actually legit. The part about shoe malls and retirement castles, though? TOTALLY true.

Hi There! I noticed that your photo of John Young's BMW sidecar has a credit line of retrothing.com.

Since the term "copyright" has been bantered about, how about putting the correct credit on the photo?

I shot it, and I own it.

Thanks!!!
