Jointech J-Pro JL7100 Mini Laptop is a bit crap, but only costs a C-note

jl7100_big.jpg

This little netbook-a-like from Jointech won't be running a desktop-class operating system with only 64MB of RAM and 64MB of ROM, but with a moderately large keyboard and a stunningly low price — they're shooting for a hundred bucks — its Windows CE 5.0 brains might still be able to work up something usable for basic text entry and modest web browsing. If they can add a flash memory expansion slot and perhaps a Linux version, the little laptop with a 7-inch screen could find its way into a few hearts.

Nice Bezel

Hundred bucks, ey?

It might be neat to tinker with.
There are a fair amount of apps that'll run on it.

A hundred bucks for a shitty notebook seems to me to be pretty representative of our fucked up out of control consumer society. These machines are full of stuff that is simply bad shit: Lead, arsenic, antimony trioxide, polybrominated flame retardants, selenium, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, mercury.

At 100 bucks a pop for a machine that is very nearly obsolete, we're encouraging people to purchase, dispose, and repurchase. No one is going to spend money to recycle their $100 notebook-let.

And supposing this person did recycle it. Some estimates suggest that 50 to 80 percent of so-called "E-waste" that is "recycled" in the US ends up on container ships bound for the third world. Once they've arrived, these machines sit in piles in landfills where the poor--paid miniscule amounts--strip them bare, frequently using corrosive acids to disolve chips and get at the silver inside, or simply burning the machines to get at the metal inside.

...OK so that was a bit of an over-reaction to an innocuous post about a cheap laptop, but apparently, I felt really strongly about it.

If it has a decent word processor, spreadsheet, and browser, I'm in.

If it has a version of Frotz available, I will definately buy one.

Bonus points for running Scumm VM.

why not just buy a second hand laptop and save the planet some resourses.

I'd consider something like this for travel, where the only things I end up doing are email, IMs, and web browsing. So far, my cell phone does all three poorly. Last time I carried around my $1,300 laptop to hotels, it ended up frying the motherboard, and would have cost me $900 to fix. Wish I'd had a cheap $100 lappy instead.

It only has viewers. If you could edit Spreadsheets and docs, maybe.
Otherwise.
Nah.

I sent an email for info to the company last night.

WiFi would be a biggie for me, but I'm still curious.
I imagine there might be WinCE drivers for existing USB WiFi adapters, but that would be my main overall issue: Device drivers.

On another topic, I don't understand decrying the production of tech stuff on tech blogs.

I have just spoken to the company in China and they confirmed that 20000 J-Pro (JL7100) is being manufactured for a UK company. The specifications published on their website were of just a basic configuration. The model available in UK will have WIFI enabled and built-in 2-8GB flash internal storate (not 64MB anymore). According to the company, GPS can be built-in. Solar power is also optional. Look forward to it in UK. Bear in mind, the price won't be $99 with extra features.

Right, fight for the green world,
But have you ever imagined the ammount of different chemicals contained in the volcano smoke?
Ever wondered how much pollution in the ocean is after a thunderstorm?
Ever wondered what will happen, when metherorite falls? Not small one, BIG One.
I'm not saying we shouldn't ever bother.
Just don't start insulting on anything.
Look how much mobile phones there are and they are changed every half of year?
Blame me, blame everything, but in the end we all are going to die, sooner or later.

This has great potential for education, especially if the hardware layout is documented and the JTAG port is accessible (I'm thinking EE, CS, etc...). I have been waiting and hoping for a small laptop with ARM9 core (or Cortex, ARM11, etc...) to appear on the market for quite a while. PDA keyboards are just too small (if present at all) for many practical purposes. I thought a CIRRUS EP9315 would work nicely in such a design but the Samsung chip may have led to the lower price point ($99 or less is great).

Also, as the ARM9 core is very low power, I believe that if more people used machines like this JL7100, rather than bulky desktops and overpowered laptops running bloated-and-underperforming operating systems, then some decent amount of pollution problems and energy-waste problems could be (at least partly) addressed.

Bottom line: I like it! I hope it will be distributed in North America.

A lot of people would like to port Linux to this. Will this be allowed by the manufacturer ?
