The Canon PowerShot G9 (updated from G7) is an excellent point-and-shoot camera. CHDK is almost ported to it, but since the G-series are “professional” you almost don’t need it. (Although high dynamic range (HDR) photography is just too cool not to have the CHDK scripts for.) Check Lensmate for accessories such as the machined aluminum bayonet lens adapter. There are cheap 16GB SDHC cards and 1700mAh batteries for that camera on Amazon too. The G9 is the best thing next to going whole hog for a DSLR.
