Torqeedo electric outboard boat motor

Treehugger has a video review of the "Torqeedo" electric outboard motor. It sounds a bit whiny, but certainly no more garish than a gas outboard. Each charge of the Torqeedo's lithium-manganese battery is good for a range of up to 10 miles, depending on speed and model.     #4 – I’m guessing that Raymond Loewy was discussing airplane or land vehicle design with that comment. In boat design, weight is not as important – you’re not going up steep hills in a boat. On an e-bike or other land vehicle, or an aircraft, the expense could be justified, but on a boat? No way.

    Any 24V 12Ah Lithium Manganese battery pack will weigh around 5 pounds and it costs $650 according to the link. A 24V 12Ah lead-acid pack will weigh about 20 pounds and cost around $80.

    Do you really think paying $570 dollars extra to save fifteen pounds off your trolling boat is justified? I would guess that lithium and lead battery manufacturing processes are about equally hard on the environment. NiCds are much worse than either.

    Let’s give this technology some time to evolve!
    How long have gas powered outboards been around?
    I believe we need some more competition when it comes to alternatives. I’m tired of seeing the oil and gas slicks left on my lake.

    It’s the awesome new Lithium battery. It costs about six times as much as a standard lead-acid battery, but it WEIGHS A LOT LESS, DAMMIT. Unfortunately they don’t explain why having a lightweight battery is a critical design feature in a boat, but who cares? It’s shiny! Shiny shiny shiny new technology!

    Yeah, but how much pollution is created in making the batteries so some misguided person can spend way more than they need to because there are no emissions from the motor?

    It’s not like it’s really any quieter than an equivalent 4-stroke outboard motor, and the sound it does make would make me claw my eyes out.

    I’ve been using a six hours electric motor to push my 32 foot cape george sailboat for about five years and counting. Works fine, we make five knots and a full charge lasts us about two weeks of maneuvering, moving into and out of harbor and making way when the wind dies. Cost about $2500. So far, I’ve had to replace the original solinoid, which I got from an auto parts store. Replaced it with a sealed unit. Five years of operation: 80 bucks. A diesel would easily have cost 10 grand, with installation. No idea what maintenance would have cost.

    Whats the point, exactly? We’ve had electric trolling motors about that strength (and a lot more quiet) for ever. 6 horsepower equivalent cannot be the primary outboard for most boaters.

    Lighter boats take less energy to move. “Weight is the enemy” –Raymond Loewy.

    Less pollution than it takes to make a gas powered motor. Less pollution than a gas motor creates in an hour.
