Acer scales back Aspire One aspirations

Acer’s Aspire One subnotebook has found its way to the FCC’s chop shop, writes jkkmobile, but the company itself is scaling back its expectations.

IDG‘s Dan Nystedt writes that it expects to ship 5-6 million Aspire Ones in 2008, down from its original designs for up to 7 million units. Acer’s Gianfranco Lanci says that they anticipate component shortages when they reach that number of sales, and while he wouldn’t say exactly which components, it’s probably batteries.

Here’s another shot from the FCC: That 6-cell long-life battery poking out the back.

Could have something to do with no English-standard keyboard in Canada. Only the multilingual (aka awkward and more difficult to use) keyboard is available to canadians. I know several people who would have picked up one of these badboys otherwise.

As near as I can tell from that ruler, this is computer is almost 2 METERS wide!

    /That’s not a subnotebook! That’s a wide screen TV!
    :D

I’m so tempted to get one. The keyboard looks more usable than the Eee keyboard. I just wish it was easier to upgrade. Apparently, adding more RAM requires a full disassemble. I wonder if anyone replaced the 8GB SSD with a regular laptop hard drive.
