Lamest "steampunk" iPhone ever now on eBay

5f35_1.JPG

I think we can officially give up on steampunk now, don't you? A 2G iPhone is given an excremental veneer of lacquered brown nail polish, some bad deviant art is ripped to the home screen and all of a sudden a NYC "boutique" wants a minimum of $500 for their "steampunk iPhone."

It's somehow quite a bi like watching the CEO of Hot Topic gang rape Jules Verne's corpse, isn't it?

Finally, steampunk has 'nuked the shark'. I have been waiting for its eventual demise and here it comes!!
Long live steampunk.

It's bad enough to purvey crappy swag to the mall-goth horde, but now Hot Topic has developed a one-man gang-rape!? I wish I could say I'm surprised.

I assumed it was read that he called in a horde of emo slavelings. DUH.

I love how the screen unlock slider is a Mountain Dew can. Very steampunk, that!

(Plus those out of place icons reminds me why I stopped themeing my phone: there's always some app I use that doesn't have a custom icon, totally ruining the theme.)

They do claim the case is brass plated, which is pretty cool. But you have to wonder how the metal mesh (which looks pretty junky, if you ask me) would impact reception, since the antennas are behind it.

How exactly does one person gang rape something?

Multiple personality rapist

See, now I would have glued a gear on it with a bite taken out.

That "metal mesh" looks more like plastic screen material used on screen doors and windows.

LOL, Love the Notorious B.I.G. background on the unlock screen... and the mountain dew icon, lol.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. until it's beaten to a pulp.

neither steam-powered nor punk rock.
I like some of the designs and craftyness of some of the works out of the movement, but really, get a new name! maybe victorianmetal.

and this is kinda funny...

Lame to call it Steampunk I think, but it's cooler than the smudge/scratch attracting silver surface that comes standard on an iPhone or iPod.

" As you can see the slider is a soda can and the theme goes awesome with the brass. "

I have to assume that the theme here must be 'things made out of metal'--can, coins, brass plated iPhone. It's still not working for me.

Oh, so you've seen the new Brandon Frasier vehicle "Journey To The Center Of The Earth"?

Really. I sat through the whole thing - and without the redeeming 3-D. On the upside, it was a Drive-in, and the double feature was The Dark Knight.

Thank the Gods.. I was starting to run low.

And, as if this alone didn't make it tempting enough, they're offering FREE SHIPPING!!!!!

As if I didn't think steampunk was lame enough already. HAha mountain dew can.

I have never seen a lamer bunch why is everyone so mad this community needs to grow up! Bottom line.... do we want the world we see? Or do we wish to give it our idea of aesthetic. People are so mean if you like.....you like.. if not you just don't..... no need to be so rude. I see plenty of designs that are Steampunk or not that I don't care for or appeal to my personal taste but I don't bitch about it.... I respect the idea that people are fighting industry and are being creative and sharing their ideas with the world.... and that is bigger then if I like one piece that someone has done! like I said the Bad Brass was retired by me! I just sent Jake Vonslatt at www.steampunkworkshop.com photos of The Rebel Cell (copper iphone) Cant wait to see how mad everyone is at me ; )

BTW John there is no nail polish wise guy! This phone is professionally platted... And the mesh does not interfere with the signal at all!

If something I'm selling ever gets slagged on Boing Boing, I'm logging in to say thank you for the hits.

(In rising Stewie voice)

Perhaps if you glued some brass gears onto it...?
-or maybe some copper water pipe?
You know, lots of places for the steam to go and umm...do...things?

Bit of hastily stained plywood studded with gold-painted carpeting brads for the corners maybe?

Nono the bids will come in, I'm sure.

Is steampunk dead? It was never alive, imho.

Lamest. Design motif. Evar.

Also, I'm so sick of the slippery slick iPod skins. I'd really like to have a grippier surface without having to add one of those 1/8" thick iCondoms on all my pods/phone. I have a glasses case with an awesome, shiny, fine mesh-like texture that looks classy and is grippy. I wish they'd get on with putting useful finished on gear already. Maybe someday...

Put steampunk to bed... please?

26 hours later and still no bids. That's encouraging really. It indicates that there really is no one dumb enough to spend $500 on it.

#16 - Really....Wow I live in Portland Oregon and I have seen some SORRY attempts at Art but this is my pick of the week. Being so full of yourself that you think people will buy this garbage is an epic fail EPIC! putting glitter on a turd does not make it art. Maybe if someone had actually made a REAL case mod for the phone with actual industrial artisan skills might bring in a few bucks. Using your daughters hippey dirt colored nail polish and likely someone else's summerboard/Customize theme is just sad.....please crawl back to your Battlechess newgroup and leave real concept art to the artists

I'm waiting for stonepunk. Start with the Flintstones for initial design motifs, move on from there. Live animals may be necessary for some of the more complex concepts. I see an iPhone that looks like it was flintknapped from a slab of basalt. Anybody with me here?

I felt the need to sign up here just to comment on this. The issue is not that the design sucks, I personally like it. (Except for that Mountain Dew can slider; seriously, wtf?) The issue is how it is advertised as "This phone will give you instant cool points with everyone as no one has it!" It just strikes a nerve and sounds like shameless commercialism, which no steampunk wants for our little subculture.
