Nikon says P6000 is small on size, big on "creative freedom"

P6000_WC_top.jpg

Nikon's Coolpix P6000 is aimed at DSLR users wanting something pocketable that won't incur the compromises of a standard digicam. It has a 13.5 megapixel sensor, 4x zoom lens, manual exposure and RAW support. DSLR-style features like shutter- or aperture-priority modes, and a high-end chip to kill lag and processing overhead, polish it off. It replaces the P5100.

"Nikon's Coolpix P6000 is aimed at DSLR users wanting something pocketable" -

that thing is NOT pocketable!

It could fit in my pocket, but never will. That puny 1/1.7" sensor with a ridicuously high megapixel count is like flogging a dead horse. Above 400 ISO, all details will be washed away by the necessary noise reduction, 13Mp or not.
Why can´t they learn that people who need a portable digicam in addition to their DSLR need a decent sensor size, and don´t care about megapixels?

It'll downrez to 3mp and do ISO 6400. Nikon has been all about the low noise on their SLRs lately, so hopefully they'll have some new tricks up their sleeve for this one, though yeah, physics is not working in their favor.

It definitely looks way nicer than the other alternatives in this market segment... as reluctant as this Canon shooter is to say.

And yet Panasonic manages to fit a 12x Leica lens on something about the same size (and without that ridiculous hood).

So, they are saying it has great image quality like a 6 month old 8MP canon and some of the features too?

@ joflow: It´s not a hood. Wideangle converter lens - and it says so in the top pic!

I'm not sure a kangaroo would have a pocket that big!

It's a pity that neither the camera manufacturers or the customers get that "point and shoot" doesn't require huge lenses and bazillion-pixel resolution. Ease of use, good quality pictures, long battery life and rugged construction (so you can take it anywhere) should carry the day - my Pentax Optio waterproof has served this way for two years and has produced saleable pictures for magazine articles.

How about a bit of useful research rather than pasting press releases. "Nikon Says..." Sigh.
