Plastic welding kit offers all the fun, none of the third-degree burns

110247_xl.jpgRandom Good Stuff asks the critical question regarding The Discovery Store's plastic welding toy: Does it work with Lego?

As it is, though, you just get three projects to complete — a dinosaur, plane and car — from a $30 toy that promises a way to safely weld its re-usable pieces. Besides, this is how you "weld" Lego:

I immediately recognized this from my childhood, it was a bare car chassis that you 'welded' things onto before you ran the thing into the wall and watched all the parts fly off... at least that's how I played with it.

The thing is just a plastic filament on the end of a drill, you spin the thing and touch the tip to whatever you want to weld and the friction melts the filament to the other plastic. By no means is this new, I had one in the mid 90's. It sure brings back the memories of the good old days of melted plastic fumes in my bedroom.

I had one back in the 70s. Never worked all _that_ well, but good enough I guess. I can still remember the smell too...hot polystyrene...yummmm :-(
