Leaked Palm Centro 2 ad reveals attractive new smart phone

palm_centro2_crop.jpg

This rather striking ad is purported to be a leaked copy of Palm's upcoming Centro 2 smartphone. There's no official confirmation — although an Engadget commenter aptly notes that "if this is a fake, Palm's advertising department should hire this fanboy."

Also interesting is this first peak at the Centro 2: a QWERTY-less affair with dedicated media keys and an Opera browser. Perhaps not an iPhone killer, but certainly a very attractive phone with a great advertising campaign. If the device is half as good as the ad, maybe this will bring Palm back into the game?

First question: Which OS? If it's a Windows box I have zero interest.

The absence of thumb-keyboard is a distinct negative for me. I presume it cuts costs, so I can't blame them,,, but having used a palm for many years I Really Want a less typo-prone way of taking extended notes than the gesture recognition system.

I've gotta admit, I also want to hear that they've improved the touchscreen calibration routines. Three points is not enough as the device ages.

Engadget is now linking to the creator's deviantart, a confirmation that this is fake. Kind of a shame.

I like my Centro's keyboard. That set the Centro apart. I hope they leave it.

I've tried an iPhone, but I didn't like the keyboard, and I'd need to jailbreak it to make it work with my home computer anyway.

I'll side with the commenter: Palm needs to do *something* since they're becoming a footnote -- and how hard would it be to have a popout thumb keyboard?

I have a Centro; my wife has an iPhone. Even with some practice on the Centro, it is much faster to enter text on the iPhone.

The only reason I picked a Palm Centro was because it had a QWERTY keyboard. So I guess I switch to something else if I have to next phone.

But this one is easy. I looked in the book ONCE for something specific, but that was all.

It's somebody's Marketing class project - was featured yesterday on deviantArt:

I hate the keyboard, love my Centro, and always lusted after the virtual kb of the iPhone. The physical keyboard of the Centro is almost unusable with my fat fingers. If the reports are true that the Centro 2 has a virtual kb, I can't wait.
