Wired on Nikon D3: "Light-Years Ahead of Other Prosumer-Grade Shooters"
The noticeably improved 51-point auto focus system is whip-fast and works in concert with an outstanding 1005 pixel metering sensor that gets it right in the most challenging lighting. Images are beautifully consistent with a wide dynamic range and improved noise reduction settings that give the pictures a more natural look. ... the D3 is incredibly customizable. Dial it in for lightning quick 11 frames-per-second sports action, super low light shooting (ISO up to 25600), handheld or tripod mounted live view, you name it.
I look forward to the day that I am rich enough to describe a $5,000 body as "prosumer!"

I never heard any whining on BBg about a laptop costing 5 k$. But a lowly CAMERA ...
I would whine about a $5k laptop.
Hey, does anyone know here- Do Nikons produce RAW images?? Checked the Nikon webpage and they weren't mentioned.
@DESERTSAIL912
Ya, they do.
I love the camera! I do have a Nikon D80, but this camera is the real deal! I want one!
Prosumer for the person who buys $5K watches.
Anyone want a camera that's this badass at 1/5 the price try a Nikon D300 that's as near you can get to a D3 for less than $1K.
Here's a good overview.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d300.htm
Actually, the D3 is a professional camera. Nikon also offers the D700, which is basically the sensor and imaging circuitry of the D3 but in a compact body.
It's only $3K and probably better for your average prosumer who doesn't need the small number of features (like 11 frames per second) that the D3 has that the D700 doesn't.
The D300 is the top of the prosumer range but it's a DX sensor that has more limitations than the FX sensor in the D700 and D3.
As Bshort said:
The D3 is not a prosumer camera. Nikon doesn't make a prosumer camera with a full-frame sensor. The D3 is their top of the line professional camera.
This camera is not prosumer. Nothing sumer about it. Its pro all the way.
And, I think people should be VERY wary about Ken Rockwell. He gives VERY bad photography advice, in the opinion of a million Nikon fans. Do your research people. He has some very eye opening things to say about photography, most of them complete crap. I am not going to list any of the million insane things he has said, but just google him, you will see.
Sorry to Troll and threadjack and whutknot, just trying to spread the love.
Rockwell might not please everybody, especially not pro-impersonators, but to a rusty amateur like me with >30 years of experience, his advice and assertions are frequently spot on.
Rockwell's site is best skimmed lightly - there's useful stuff in there, but be wary of the BS chaff.
