iPod Nano mockup shows luscious Touch-like interface

miguel__surez_nano_mock_up.jpg

The next iPod Nano will eschew the squatness of its predecessor for the elongated chassis of its grandfather. This we know. The reason it will do this is to channel the iPhone and iPod Touch's screen dimensions. Again, this we know. But that implies something: it implies a UI change. If the screen dimensions of the iPod Nano shift, won't the interface shift as well to be more analogous to the Touch?

That's the idea Miguel Suárez has run with. Concept, of course. Imaginary. Slavish fanboy nonsense. But I like the revised UI quite a bit. I would be very happy to see this on a new Nano, or rolled out to iPods across the line.

I find the current offerings for the nano and touch form factor to be quite appealing. You either get the large screen of the touch, or the ultra micro size of the nano.

What is so exciting about this new theoretical form factor? It looks like a crippled touch, or an oversized nano to me.

Nothing is exciting about it. I am totally fine with current screen dimensions, but it seems clear Apple's going that way anyway, in which case, I'd like it to be accomplished as nicely as possible.

Why would a touch-screen nano need a click-wheel anymore?

I agree with #3.

Apple wouldn't have a touch screen and a click wheel. They might change the UI to look like the Touch's though, and I think that is what Miguel Suárez is suggesting.

Without a touch interface, it's not clear how one could manipulate the tabs at the bottom of the screen. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple updated the Nano's interface, but I would be surprised if they pasted on this appearance without some kind of underlying functionality.

I imagine it's only a matter of time before iPods are all touch-based anyhow.

Accept not the hybrid! Shun it! Shun it!

Fun aside, total fakery, or I'm eating a hat on Sept 8.

Wait - how did we find out that the iPod will come in this new 'ultracandy' size? Cos, like, Apple forgot to say anything.

Well, Pete, there were convincing leaked shots of both new iPod Nano cases and the new iPod Nano itself in the new dimensions. It's hardly 100%, but it doesn't seem like bullshit: it makes sense that Apple would try to streamline the screen size across the iPod line. If we're wrong, we'll publically slap our foreheads, don't you fret.

As for the touchscreen, I never said the iPod Nano would have one. There's not a single hint of that out there. That said, you don't need to have a touchscreen to have the Nano use an iPhone-like music interface. For example, the buttons at the bottom of this concept could be accessed by simply hitting the menu button on the function wheel, then scrolled between. Will it look like this? Probably not. But I still think it looks rather sweet.

wow. ok, I may be alone on this, but doesn't it bare more than a passing resemblance to the new HTC S740?

You know what I'd like to see from Apple? What I'd really, really like to see?

A "lickable" interface that licks you back.

Pete & Brownlee: I'm forever amused at the tone certain sites take to Apple rumours (iPod updates especially).. at a certain point they just become fact, are touted as fact and only quickly forgotten if they turn out to be totally wrong. Something which happens less and less these days, mind you.

Whilst i'm pretty sure this is more or less how it is going to look, we have to remember that before we saw that red case there was a very lame green rendering that looked exactly the same, but with a mini-USB port on the bottom.

I would bet eating headware over it, but remaining skeptical makes for a much more exciting Jobsnote.

Can't wait to have it.
