That I'm a Mac ad campaign: is it a soap opera that will never go away?

crapads.jpg

Cult of Mac's Pete Mortensen joins the chorus of those bored of the Mac's long-running ad campaign:

Apple’s core Mac marketing campaign has become the one thing the Cupertino Collective can never allow itself to be: boring.Apple’s been here before. Switch had its (rather desperate) day. Think Different saved Apple during its darkest times. But ... Get a Mac’s playful jabs are starting to make Apple look small. “Able to run Microsoft Office” isn’t news to anyone who could be swayed by a TV ad.

Hit the kids up with "play, create, study." Make the personal computing equivalent of the iPod silhouette campaign: music, movement, eidetic swarms of data and art. It's not a lifestyle, it's your life. Mac.

I'd buy another one!

I don't consider myself a Mac guy or a PC guy (nor a Linux guy if it matters), but I liked the HP ads. They really pushed the uses for the creative types. Apple has always been loved and always called themselves better for graphic design. They should really move their ads towards pushing the creative aspects (Garage Band, iMovie, iPhoto, etc). I was shocked when I saw yet another new Mac vs. PC ad last night. I thought they had said just about everything they could. There's also nothing worse than advertising based on saying your competition sucks. After all, they're basically telling the people who they are trying to attract that what they're currently using is junk. That doesn't work with a lot of people. They should by saying why they're better and what they're good at. The whole "it just works" or "mac is better" thing doesn't work.

Soon enough Mac and PC are going to sit down to have a cup of Taster's Choice coffee, and find they both share a rather distinct fondness for the instant coffee...

...and possibly more?

It won't end until Microsoft and company have a competent response.

And fix vista.

Mac and PC are in a polyamorous relationship with Linus Torvalds, but PC is secretly sleeping with NeXT.

The only time I ever thought of switching to a Mac was when I thought it would help me hit on cute stoner chicks.

Maybe if they changed the Mac and PC guys to girls and made the Mac one a smokin' hottie, and the PC one her "nerdy friend" it might work better.

Perhaps it's, you know, working?

(you are not the jerk being marketed to, as we say)

See, while the ads are entertaining and true, we don't need Apple to tell us that they're hipper and easier than PCs. They're competing when they don't have to.

I want to see the Korean girl who works at the iPhone factory v. the Zune tattoo guy.

#5: That might backfire, the nerdy girlfriend is some people's type...

#8: Korean iPhone girl would hand that Zune whiner his testes in a jar. THUNDERDOME! THUNDERDOME!!

I think that even if you GAVE me a MAC, I wouldn't use it. I don't even know anyone who owns one and the people whom I've met that have had one weren't any more pleased with it than they were PCs.
There is nothing you can do on a MAC that you can't do on a PC, except pay too much for it.
Of course we should also mention that not unlike the next iWhatever, you're buying a name, the mystique and some style. Not that Apple products aren't good quality, but at the rate they come out with new models, they give forced obsolescence a real bite.

The regretable fact is that as you've been talking about these ads, you've proved them efective.

In the horrible world of advertising (i've worked there from time to time) it's almost irelevant if an ad is good or bad, so long as people take notice.
