Tomorrow’s Apple’s big “Let’s Rock” event. All we know for sure is that the iPod Nano 4G will be announced… probables included iPod Touch and iPod Classic Changes. The big hopeful? New Macs: specifically, the rumored MacBook and MacBook Pro updates. The MBP in particular is way past due for a refresh, and there’s been whispers for a while about the MacBook going aluminum.
We’re still hopeful, but analysts aren’t. Stock has dropped over 9% over the last couple of weeks as research houses have absorbed and spread rumors that the announcement will be “underwhelming.” The big downer is that they seem, across the board, pretty skeptical of significantly refreshed MacBooks.
Okay, analysts are the bloggers of the business world, so grain of salt time. But it certainly is true that the “Let’s Rock” event seems to be focused primarily on iPods. Perhaps they’re right. Perhaps expecting a refreshed MacBook line to be crammed into an iPod event is pie-in-the-sky. But goddamn, Apple: the MacBook Pro has gone almost three years without a refresh. Gimme a few more USB ports, at least!

Okay, so here’s the rub (for me). I’ve got a decent Dell notebook for work. It’s been a solid workhorse for a few years, but it’s time to get a new laptop.
Somehow, I’ve managed to do the unthinkable, the nearly impossible even. I’ve convinced the IT folks in our 100% Windows shop to get me a Macbook Pro. Woohoo!
But, knowing that this will be my main work computer for the next 3-4 years, I don’t want to sign myself up for a model that will be immediately superceded with something faster and shinier – so I’m waiting for the refresh before I get a Macbook. In the meantime I suffer along with a failing keyboard and numerous other wear-induced failings on my trusty Dell.
If new Macbooks aren’t announced in this event, when’s the next Apple product announcement?
Everyone else says ‘No shit’. Seriously though, Apple has, for the past few years, announced iPod related stuff at an early autumn event, and with the title being ‘Let’s Rock’, it’s a pretty safe bet to say the trend will continue this year. Do people get paid to come up with this stuff?
