Amy Neal’s “Colorful,” Kristen Getchell’s “Kaleidoscope,” and Ivan Flores’ “Sound Waves,” are the winners of Sony’s “My graphics splash” design competition. Each will be sold as a limited edition Sony Vaio FW. The winners got five grand; the finalists all received machines with their designs on them.

My own favorite is Nature’s Call from Above, by Nimbus. Dear Sony: have you ever considered making a Print-on-Demand laptop service? Does the technology even exist? As beautiful as some of these compo entries are, people would pay a serious premium to have custom designs properly set for them out the factory.

I remember one luxury notebook producer offered this kind of service, just can’t remember the name.
Soon customizations like these will be commonplace, woe the poor modders and their individuality.

  2. HeavyD14 says:

Skinit at http://www.skinit.com/ seems to do this. They will make skins for just about any kind of electronic gadget and you can upload your own image. I haven’t used it myself, so I can’t vouch for image or build quality.

Whatever happened to Joel’s etched rhino on macbook plans? I remember him soliciting help with the image but nothing since? I thought it was a pretty sweet motif to slap on your laptop. reminded me of “The Hippopotamus Service” which has been on BB before.

    • Joel Johnson says:

Oh! I got that done, finally, meerkat. It was just in one corner of the laptop, though, and then the laser puked on some of the graphics and blacked out a lot of the detail. I should still post a picture, though.

  4. meerkat says:

Joel – That would be cool to see – I think my ladyfriend may have helped with the vectorization of that rhino.

That’s cool, Heavyd14, but the problem with skins (and even etching, though I love etching) is that it’s an addition. Print-on-demand laptops would mean the design goes on before the clearcoat, so to speak: it couldn’t be scratched off, fade, or cover the unit’s natural texture.
