It only goes 25 MPH, doesn't have much distance, plugs in to charge (which in my state means emissions from coal electric plants) and looks like if it got hit by anything bigger than a peanut it would crumple and the batteries would crush you in acidic goo.
Since most local through streets in NJ are 35 or higher, this car would just piss everyone off and be a target for road rage, as well.
I vote no.

NAR, have you compared emissions from coal plants to those from a car?
No disputing the overly low speed, though. I didn't know Chrysler was in the golf cart business.

I could never drive a car with a big smiley face on the front. first time I had a bad day I would push the piece of crap off a cliff.

This is a product from Chrysler subsidiary GemCars (http://www.gemcars.com/). They make 'Neighborhood Electric Vehicles' or like dculberson implied, souped-up golf carts.

Like most Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEV), the Peapod looks like it started as a golf cart.
My favorite NEV is the Zenn http://www.zenncars.com/ since it actually looks like a car and not an upgraded golf cart.
If the roads surrounding my subdivision weren't > 35mph, I'd be buying a Zenn and using it for 80+% of my trips.
NEVs are great if you live in an area where you don't need to go over 25 mph and over 30-40 miles most of the time (rent a car or buy a cheep regular car for the other trips). It would make a great commuting car if you live in an urban area that doesn't have good public transportation.
I'm still waiting for a reasonably priced pure electric car that can go on interstate highways for at least a little while.

I'd love something like that ... if it could do 100 miles on one charge at 70mph in hilly terrain in the rain in the dark with the radio on.

Hey, you know what's cheaper and gets up to similar speeds?
A bicycle.
You don't even have to plug it in!

I concur. Bicycles FTW! Also, if you really have a thing for electric motors, they have electric bicycles these days. Check out the Schwinns in particular

Nice idea but it needs coal or nuclear power to charge it - and usually at night when very little power is being used and therefore fed into the grid. This means more money for power comapnies.

There is a huge market for this type of Urban use car in large crowded European & Asian cities. Sophisticates, living there, will find this car practical, attractive. and affordable. It will be a success if marketed there.

I am Canadian and our 'neighborhood' speed limits are 60kmh and this PEADOD only goes the equivalent of aprox. 45kmh --- in theory it's a good idea, but It should be made for all North American city speed limits don't you think? Even in our rural areas the speed limit increase to 80kmh..so then what?
I am shopping around for my teenage daughters and when I saw this for the first time I thought it would be ideal- but upon gathering all the facts on this vehicle I will now opt for either a bus pass for them or a great bicycle!
Needs to be more thought out to appeal to more than the granny population in Floria retirement communities!!!!
Not impressed!

I eagerly look forward to a viable small battery powered car to run errands around town, but I don't understand how putting an enclosure on a golf cart helps get to that goal.
Try again Chrysler... or is the real goal here to later trumpet that Peapod failure proves Americans wont buy green transportation?

I own a GEMcar. They all can be upgraded to go 35mph. They are tough little cars with lots of options. This car is good for most all small towns and cities. I would never drive it in any large megatropolis or roads above 45mph. I will wait to see the final looks of this car in 2010. Maybe they'll add some teeth to the front.

You guys, this should not be an emotional response to this car. If you could slow down just a little, take the emotional aspect of your comments out and think for a second you will realize the value of this car.
This car is just the beginning of where these cars will go. If Orville and Wilbur Wright listened to all of you naysayers, we would not be flying today. However, they built what you could easily today, say was a piece of garbage that should never have gotten off the ground. However, it was the prototype if you will that opened up peoples imaginations and started would is now a multi trillion dollar airline industry that is as common place to us as toilet paper!
I do see the limitations in this car but think not of what it does not provide or do, think of the great start that it is, and what we can do to enhance it. Think of the solution, not the problem. By the way, with all the initiatives such as windpower (which incidentally generates predominantly at night) it will reduce the requirements of coal and nuclear power.

Great! I am looking forward to the end of oil, waste and gas. This is the right step for the world and should have happened years ago. This car can stop oil consumption and stop the assault on the earth. Its made of 95% recycled materials and leaves a ZERO carbon print. Wow. I am waiting for it to hit the sales floors. More companies will fall into this line of cars if consumers support it.
