The Self-Balancing Unicycle

Focus Designs has created this actually-rather-holy union between a Segway and a unicycle. They’ve called it the “Self Balancing Unicycle” and claim that it’s about “half as difficult” as riding a regular unicycle. I wouldn’t expect these to start tearing up college campuses anytime soon, but if you’re a halfway-decent unicyclist and have an interest, they’re selling a limited production run of ten for $1,500 apiece.

Cool piece of design but for 1500 you can hire someone to help hold you up while you unicycle. Unicycling really isnt as hard as people make it out to be – provided you have the required muscle strength/endurance in your legs, it is real exercise, especailly on uneven surfaces

Man, I spent months learning to ride a real one! Now they’re making it so if you throw enough money at it, anyone can do it! Awful, just awful.

I could never get over the wobbly-ness of a uni.

Isn’t the whole point of riding a unicycle that you can balance on the damn thing? If you want a single-wheeled motorcycle, I’d go with this.

#&: Yes, but this self-balancing unicycle is available now, not as some design project with a guestimate target of 2025.

I think that this is pretty cool. People are comparing it to the unicycle, instead of to the segue, which is a mistake. I don’t think the idea is to replace the unicycle, it’s to replace the segue, only at under a fifth of the price.

I can see them becoming popular at the Googleplex…

Also, note that these aren’t entirely self balancing. You still need to have good balance to keep from falling sideways.
