Japanese cellular carrier NTT Docomo announced 22 new handsets this morning. Beautiful and strangely uniform, the range does have a look about it that suggests they’re not much fun to play with–a reminder of Lisa Katayama’s explanation of why Zen software design does not come from Japan.

Is that a game of GO on the F-01A? That is so cool.
Snooooooozzzzzzzze
Wow! Lisa started the “Japanese mobile phones suck” meme…
Big respect for this achievement!
Still it’s interesting how this meme never spread among millions of Japanese mobile phones users who seem to enjoy their mobile phones way more than we do in Europe or USA.
Probably the secret of the Japanese Ketai boom is that creating shitty interfaces and enforcing bad telcos policies is the right way to create a successful market…
NTT? That headline looks weird. People usually say Docomo. The NTT is just a legacy thing. I suggest an update to your headline. Besides, Japanese phones are still leagues ahead of any other markets.
Sure, they have an issue with usability, but show me a cell phone that doesn’t! Last time I checked, the cell phone I have in Japan is many many times more advanced than anything in Europe.
