Actually, this is a South African product.

Heh. The ad makes fun of Jacob Zuma (who will probably be South Africa’s next president). He thought that showering after intercourse would reduce the risk of HIV infection. “Showertime!” :D

so how much does it cost to ship stuff to U.S. from South Africa… just so I know…?

@#2 Good to see that billions of dollars in HIV prevention and health education worked so well that apparently the “soon to be” leader of SA has some third grade ideas about the situation.

I’m interested in the technology behind the snap pack condom though. How does it break open when you bend it? How does it not break when it’s being smushed in my drawer?

  5. Bugs says:

I’d buy some, but only if they make that exact *whoooosh*ing noise when applied.

  6. Jenonymous says:

Hrm…every time I’ve ever seen one put on, it was done with one hand on the condom and the other on the unit in question. Is it really possible to put one on with the “look ma no hands” movement shown here?

The “Pronto Condom” at the end sounds just like something out of an Japanese anime….

  8. PoisonedV says:

@6 I would have to say no. The video isn’t very representative, seeing as how the average penis isn’t 6 inches of cold, hard, plastic.

  9. Jarvik7 says:

@7 This type of condom has actually been in Japan for sometime so its not just the sound effects

  10. SuperMario__Galaxy says:

@8 (Where’s the freaking reply button?) Speak for yourself.

  11. Downpressor says:

@9 got a source for that claim? I’ve not seen em here but maybe I’m not looking in the right place.

Yet, a package so easily breached would be more likely to have a shorter shelf life due to opening prematurely and drying out, and would be more likely to break, if old, or merely from the friction of the packaging.

I suppose the trade off is the reduced likely hood of someone failing to roll one on, and getting their cooties all over the outside, before they flip it over and slip it in the correct way.

  13. semiotix says:

I like how the YouTube freeze-frame has him making a Fonzie-style “eyyyy!” gesture. Seems appropriate.

  14. the_boy says:

this is more or less fantastic. “People don’t think that I use the condom. But I do! I’m just so quick”

Implied – “Haha, betcha didn’t think we were going to have safe sex, now did you?”

it’s like the perfect opposite of frat culture

  15. iSimone says:

I’m somewhat surprised it’s so late on boingboing, but better late than never.

@THE BOY it’s even more interesting than that.
It’s a joke at the expense of a senior South African politician – former Deputy President Jacob Zuma.

Mr Zuma said in a court case that he had showered after having unprotected sex with a woman he knew to be HIV-positive in order not to contract the virus. Was on a BBC report once.

Also although the product is only available in South Africa, it might soon come to western countries also marketed as 4:secs Condoms.

  16. iSimone says:

Oh sorry didn’t realise someone already mentioned the Zuma thing.
