Ovation iDea: Guitar with a built-in MP3 recorder, player

ovation_idea.jpg

Okay, this is simple and perfect: The new Ovation iDea acoustic/electric guitar comes with a built-in MP3 recorder that, with a touch of a button, records the strings right off the pick-up and a separate, player-facing microphone for voice.

Looks like the iDea (horrible name, guys!) is going for around $600 at places like ZoZo. I used to have an Ovation A/E a while back and it was always more guitar than I needed — in a good way. If you've already got a newer Ovation, the iDea OPi-1 preamp — the recordy bit — can be ordered separately and installed in your guitar.

This is an amusing nice IDEA, but it fails to integrate a memory slot. 100 minutes of recording is dismal on today's standards.

For that price you can buy the super powerful and tiny H4 Zoom recorder PLUS a guitar.

Ovation generally are the best guitar for the money. Currently I own a ukulele made by them that I'd recommend to anyone.

That said, 100 minutes is no time at all. Flash expansion please?

Not perfect: perfect would require a jack for a footswtich so you could start and stop recording without having to stop playing.

Also, in my opinion Ovation guitars sound like pieces of plastic, but I'm willing to admit that part might just be me.

Built-in microphone? Spidey-sense... tingling!
