9 Responses to Best and Worst reworked logos of 2008

Logo originated as a jargon truncation of “logotype”, which comes straight from the Greek (λογότυπος, logotypos). If the plural of this contraction bothers you, may I suggest you undo the compression and write “logotypes.”

Though combining it with another truncation and the Greek form does yield the interesting concept of “logo typos”…

Bah! Etymology be damned. I vote for “loga” or “logum” as the plural form of “logo.” Neither works quite as well as an alternative plural as, say, “boxen,” but both are clearly superior to “logos,” which sounds confusingly related to non-plural nouns like Eros and pathos.

Methinks the SanDisk people were worried that the curve of the “D” was too similar to the Islamic crescent moon image.

Methinks it’s more like the super-thin strokes of the letters, and the sharp point of that D, made it nearly impossible to reproduce at the very tiny sizes required to, you know, print or engrave the logo on tiny chips or what-have-you. You can only get so small before the tiny strokes become invisible.

    Hooray for logos!

When I first saw the new logo of Animal Planet, I thought it was some “kids time” which uses logos designed by 8-year-olds.

I smoked Camel Lights for years and was a little annoyed with the redesign. I agree with your post. The funny thing is that I finally quit shortly after and am still smoke free 9 months later. Maybe their redesign helped my subconscious want to quit. Sucks to be them.

For me, this is one of those times when the repetition of a word makes it sound weird and goofy.

    logo
    logo
    logo
    logo
    logo

Pft, the Camel packaging is nothing short of awesome, look at that type, man! gorgeous.

Even Nazi’s had some nicely designed propaganda.
