A 1962 Sears brand chemistry set... you know, for kids

b671_3.jpg

MAKE spotted this fantastic 1962 era chemistry set from Sears up on eBay. This was apparently marketed to Kennedy-era I.D.ers as well as science minded tots: the first bullet point mentions both "exciting chemistry and magic experiments."

Science! If you're stupid, it's just like magic!

The ad copy is probably not referring to the the mechanics of the experiments being "magic" more likely its referring to "magic tricks" such as the sort described in great old magic books like: http://www.abra4magic.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=B089&Category_Code=Books

This kind of stuff is not legal anymore in the us, cause you could use it to synthetise meth or bombs.

Sadly, I get the feeling that when the eBay seller ships this, a bomb-sniffing dog somewhere will bark at it, and the entire set will be detonated with local TV news cameras watching. Shortly thereafter, the FBI will show up at the sellers home, which will be turned over in the name of fighting terrorism.

I'm always a pessimist in the morning.

No, TJS, you are not being a pessimist. Recently a chemistry student was arrested for having a chemistry lab set up in his garage. He was charged with having equipment for a meth lab. The cops withdrew that charge. Now he is charged with having bomb making materials, nevermind that everyone has gasoline in their vehicles, bottles and rags.

He has been placed pretty much under house arrest. You know, guilty until proven innocent.

It's hard to be a creative genius without corporate backing. Damn authorities preventing people from accidentally blowing up their homes!
