Wooden Laptop Case

Designed with the 15inch MacBooks in mind, Rainer Spehl's wooden laptop case is gorgeous, useful and likely very expensive: "For Purchases please contact Rainer Spehl."

Photographed here by Achim Hatzius, it's another one of those ineffable Do Want gadget porn situations.

All thoughts of practicality aside, I'd also want one.

I hate it when people look at something awesome and say "you could make one of those yourself cheaply" when they have no intention of doing it, but hey, I think you could make one of those yourself cheaply.

Looks like luan crap. Luan is one step above balsa wood. I always wonder why people bother to do something nice with crap materials.

Mine will be hand-riven American black walnut.

Don't you think solid walnut would be a pretty bad material for a case like that? It seems like you'd end up with warping, cracking, water damage, etc.

I love hardwood, but sometimes a plywood or composite core is just the better solution.

I agree with DCULBERSON, plywood would be the best bet for the case. I'd probably change the lid, as well, so that it'd offer a bit my rigidity when closed.
