Dr. Manhattan shoots the Apollo Moon Landings

Like all of his other films, Zack Snyder’s Watchmen will doubtlessly be terrible, but I will give props where they are due: the Watchmen viral team sure is doing some great work.

Consider this picture posted on the Flickr page of the Watchmen viral site, The New Frontiersmen. The caption: “Dr Manhattan photographs Neil Armstrong on the occasion of the Apollo moon landings, July 20th 1969.”

Charlie Sorrel of Gadget Lab thinks the attention to detail to be pretty impressive:

The best part? That Doc Manhattan is holding the camera properly. The Apollo missions took medium format Hasselblads along with them. These cameras have waist level viewfinders, so you hold them low and look into them from above. This is the kind of attention to detail that is getting us so juiced about the movie.

And the other benefit, of course, is that a Hasselblad waist-level camera allows them to conceal Dr. Manhattan’s blue, nuclear wang.

300 was terrible in an awesome way.

Dawn of the Dead was fantastic. John and I have almost gotten into fist fights over this.

Manhattan is wearing his thong here.

Is that a telephoto lens or are you just happy to see me?

Dawn of the Dead really wasn’t that bad! It had some horrible cheesy parts, yeah, but what proper zombie movie doesn’t?? It wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected it to be. I enjoyed it. Not as much as Shaun of the Dead, of course, but still…

Dr Manhattan’s blue nuclear wang is located at his waist? That doesn’t say much for his clock-repair skills.

Charlie Sorrel may be thrilled at the marketing teams attention to detail, but I’m not. Although Doc Manhattan is holding the Hasselblad right, 120 film (which is larger than 35 mm and what the Hasselblad 500 C uses) doesn’t have the same perforations (or sprocket holes) as 35 mm film. Woops!

A fun bit of promotional material. My pedantic $.02, I am an Apollo fan:
The spacesuit is sagging and seems to be on a shrimpy person. Some way of making the suit look pressurized would help. The PLSS, or backpack support system, is big enough IRL that it should be more visible here.

The suits made for ‘From The Earth To The Moon’ were super accurate, but could be expensive to rent, if available. Finally, Earth is too large and colorful for a lunar point of view.

But the heck with all that, it’s still fun. Honest!

  9. ShadowDancer says:

actually, the suits used in “from earth to the moon” were rented from the same company which supplied the suits to “watchmen”. also the camera, lunar module, etc. are all the same props and set dec.

it looks to me that the wardrobe person on the set didn’t dress the model/actor correctly.

I am a big nerd, but you people… YIKES!

    I kid, I kid. :-)

I would prefer all the haters zip-it before the movie is released and they realize they may have been overly harsh. Oh wait! This is the internet! More torches and pitchforks please.

I’m sorry, but no Doc cock equals giant fail in my book. What are we, 12yr olds? It’s a penis, not a tour of the gas chambers.

  12. Anonymous says:

the de-cock-ing of the good doctor isn’t neccessarily the studio being prudes, there’s a large part of the story where he’s wearing superhero underwear, and then (spoiler warning!) he goes the full monty later on.

anyway, this is awesome and i’m quite excited for the movie. i may be disappointed in the end, but i’m still excited right now.

Well I’m looking forward to the Film & I’m loving this teaser/build up stuff. Plus it’ll probably help with the back story for a lot of people.

I’ve been waiting for this Film for 20years. Mind you I waited a long time for the Judge Dredd Film and they cocked that right up.

  14. Tenn says:

I want the full-frontal that was visible in the comic. And the polyamorous scene with him and his girl.

I am going to be terribly disappointed if this movie doesn’t rock out with the Doc’s cock out.
