HP ships Mini 1000 six-cell battery

hp-mini-1000-20090127.jpgA common way for computer manufacturers to keep the price down on netbooks is by only providing a three cell battery over a six cell, then releasing the six cell as an aftermarket accessory. Since netbooks are, to me, entirely about being long-lasting writing and browsing machines, shipping a three cell battery is basically all it takes for me to lose interest in a netbook forever.

HP has just started selling the 6-cell battery for their HP Mini 1000, and it's pretty much case-in-point for why this practice annoys me. They are selling it for $153.90, which is almost half of the netbook's $350 starting price.

If you can get away with a 3-cell battery on your netbook, that's great, but for people like me, that makes the cheapest HP Mini 1000 a $500 proposition... and if you're going to be spending that much on a netbook, the Samsung NC10 is still best-of-class, and ships
with a 6 cell battery standard for $50 less.

There will be a cheap third-party Chinese six-cell for the mini along in a month or so, at about 25% of the price for 90% of the battery life.

(Says the guy who just ordered his mini 1000 yesterday.)

Charlie, beware the flames of LiIon!

Anyone know of a vendor of pocket fire extinguishers? Lithium/electrically safe for starters, capacity 100ml or less (thank you, War On Terrrr)? Or maybe just a Nomex honeycomb-lined netbook sleeve?

(Actually, I've had a number of cheap third-party LiIon batteries over the years, and none of 'em spontaneously combusted -- although one or two didn't perform to spec on the go juice front. But of course, your milage may vary.)

Now, about that Nomex netbook case ...

Actually, my experience has been the same as yours; no fires but lots of disappointment in battery life and number of cycles.

The HP Mini is a great machine. I hate the way it hits vendors as a mix and match of SKUs (no bluetooth or3G card slot, but with SSD. etc etc.)

I don't know why everyone sleeps on the Acer Aspire One. It ships with 6-cell, has a 160GB HDD, and at this moment is $379 at Amazon. And in the blue it's pretty as hell.
