Spanish steampunk clock

A great clock by Tenerifean artist of Gonzalo Álvarez. It looks something like the center timepiece of a steampunk Swiss Family Robinson.

Steampunk should have some sense of intricacy and craftsmanship. This just looks like a cartoonish piece of Gnome engineering straight out of World of Warcraft.

Hm. I sorta like it in the “prototype” category… but I agree that the core of the steampunk aesthetic is partly about craftsmanship, and even as a prototype I’d like to see the bezel and face done more cleanly.

There’s a difference between distressed, and not-right-to-begin-with. This feels just a bit too much like the latter.

For some reason the pipes and wood look really fake to me… are you sure this isn’t one of those extremely elaborate cakes?

Just pointing out a possible mistake… “Tenerifean artist OF Gonzalo Álvarez?” Shouldn’t it be “Tenerifean artist Gonzalo Álvarez”?

    A thousand times no.

Like a lot of “steampunk”, this consists of a clock with a lot of extraneous hardware boted on. It’s ornamental, that’s all.

    Woo! That looks awesome!
Used to have something like this when I was a kid. Not sure what happened to it. :(

looks like something from World of Warcraft

also, wasn’t “steampunk” originally about making more beautiful objects?

  12. Anonymous says:

    This thing is awful.

If the pipes and valve handle are circular, why the hell wouldn’t the face of the clock be circular?

    Not steampunk.

  13. Anonymous says:

I disagree, I think it is beautiful!

@#1 The steam clock is in Vancouver.

  15. themark says:

Yeah, I always thought steampunk was about beauty, but it seems to have lost it’s way in the press. This clock is… interesting… but that’s as far as I can go and still be polite. C’mon John!

The steam clock in Vancouver is powered by the underground steam system that was (and still is to some extend)used to heat the older buildings. It is completely clockwork, it has never been electric powered although the chime controlled by an electric motor. Nice big steam whistles to chime the hours and quarters to. Quite elegant and meticulous works. Now that is steam punk done right.

Ugh. The Victorians were really pretty capable woodworkers you know. And they did all right with brass as well. I believe they were capable of drawing circles as well, though the wingnut might not have been used on the exterior of clocks yet. Also, many of the gears in old clocks actually do something. This thing is wrong and ugly on so many levels.

There’s a fabulous actually steam-powered clock in Victoria (maybe Vancouver?) Maybe we can review the aesthetic event before posting everything that calls itself steampunk.

The faux-victorian steam clock in Gastown that was built in the 70s and for an extended period was powered by electricity? Sounds perfectly steampunk to me.
