What happened to iPhone push?
Hey, so whatever happened to iPhone push notifications? Weren't we supposed to have them by now?
Dan Moren theorizes on some reasons why Apple conveniently forgot about it. This one has the ring of truth to it though, given the MobileMe debacle:
It seems plausible that, having learned from that experience, Apple wasn’t sufficiently confident in launching yet another online service, especially one that might have been more complicated than the company first anticipated. One developer I talked to opined that Apple might not have thought the whole idea through, given the issues of scale that the system might encounter in the real world.

Ridiculous. Look I bought an iPhone despite the initial lack of ability to instant message effectively based on the PROMISE that notifications would be coming in September. It's false advertising of sorts. I bought a product with the promise of a feature within a timeframe that has come and gone. I'm surprised more people aren't in an uproar over this, maybe it's just me.
If you buy something based on a feature IT DOES NOT HAVE when you buy it, you're buying the wrong thing.
I'm sorry I just figured that when a multi billion dollar company promised a feature coming in the near future as a selling point I expect that company to deliver. It's not like an oh yea we might have it or we're thinking about it, it was a definitive yes the company will deliver this function that users want within a few months of launch.
My guess? Apple realized this just wasn't going to be a proper substitute for background tasks and went back to the drawing board.
Ultimately, I think we're most likely to see an actual background process system, but one governed by particularly tight requirements in terms of memory footprint, CPU time, and network polling frequency.
As for notifications... The home screen is already due for some serious reorganization with the proliferation App Store content, so whatever's coming this summer will likely include a way of seeing all your "badged" apps at once.
I too am hoping for some homescreen reorganization. Although that said I don't have that much of a problem navigating to find apps but it would be interesting to see another interface from Apple. Secondly I hope that we do see a new iPhone OS update over the summer. As of yet though I havent seen anything to say that is bound to happen. Right now though I'm pretty happy with my Jailbroken iPhone, I have rudimentary push notifications, background apps, and video recording and QIK.
Multi-billion dollar companies are the pretty much at the bottom of "trusted sources of information" list.
gasp! You can't be serious, Pork! That's anti-American sentiment you're expressing!
You must believe all Corporate approved messages. And when your perception of the future conflicts with the past message, it's your memory or perception at fault. Obviously!
Dculbs, I think I am in danger of developing a blogosphere man-crush on you.
iPhone push? I want the iPhone plush!
@1 - you missed that whole "Products and specifications are open to change." clause? Sure, it sucks that you wanted it and it didn't appear, but at the same time "buyer beware" is always good advice.
