Invasion of the Mini USB monitors

sidestageno1.jpg

Mimo’s 7″ monitors have a 800×480 display resolution; novel stands that let them sit just about anywhere; and they can rotate to portrait orientation. Lurking in the blogs for months, they’re finally shipping, beating competition from D-Link to the shelves. All the new breed of mini-monitors are USB, too, meaning that they don’t waste a DVI port.

I’ve often wanted a small auxiliary monitor on which to slap IM windows, twitter deck apps, scratch pads and the like, but finding a reasonable balance between size, price and quality was always a pain. So it’s natural that as soon as I thought “Bah, I’ll just get a second display,” last year, than the exact thing I wanted originally should appear, grinning.

It’s a pretty cool idea, although they’re selling for about twice what I’m currently willing to pay. I could pick up a 17″ LCD on eBay for less. . .

    Any word about Linux support?

I wouldn’t bet on it. However, I’ve asked for one to review, so we’ll find out!

@3: it looks just tall enough to slip an Eee under, vertically. it would make a great centerpiece for an Eee ‘desk dock’.

If they do Linux I’m definitely getting one to go with my Eee, they’re cool as all hell. Don’t care if I don’t get decent use out of them, they just look awesome…

…and with one word, you elevate yourself above every other gadget blog. Talk about economical.

I wonder if you could get these to work with wireless usb and have them run off a battery pack.

It would be like a wireless extension of your main machine, so you could pick it up and take it to the kitchen, or use it to check email while on the couch, or use it as an extension to a media center pc to queue up the next song of movie.

If I could find a decent wireless USB solution I’d buy one to try it out.

Oh man, I’d love to have a couple of these. Documentation on the left one, console window + Twitterific on the right. So badass.

You can purchase them now at mimomonitors.com with free shipping.

(full disclosure – I work for the company that distributes these in the US)
